4. Operating Modes:
a) Stand By Mode :
This is default mode & shall not be possible to select by the LP.
At Power-On or If No CAB is selected TCAS comes into this Mode
and performs brake system health test if the cab is occupied.
In this Mode Train is supervised for Standstill. If any movement is
detected it applies EB.
On test success it Suggests SR or Shunt Mode to Loco Pilot.
b) Staff Responsible (SR) Mode :
This mode to be selected by Loco pilot by pressing SR followed by
CNFM soft keys on DMI, this mode allows the loco pilot to move the
train under his own responsibility in TCAS territory.
Supervises Loco Ceiling Speed (Maximum Permissible speed), Roll
back, Reverse Movement protection, Head on & Rear end collisions
prevention.
SoS generation and emergency stop with SOS reception, if TIN,
direction and absolute location information is available.
c) Limited Supervision (LS) Mode :
This mode cannot be selected by Loco pilot. System automatically
enters from SR to LS mode when MA(Movement Authority) or SSP(
Static Speed Profile) is received from Stationary TCAS unit
Supervises Loco Ceiling Speed.
If Track Data is Valid & Traffic Direction is Known, it Supervises
Section Speed (PSR) & Collision Targets.
It Performs Brake system health test.
It obeys General SoS from Station if Loco is within 3km radius,
Supervise Roll away & Reverse Movement protection.
If Radio communication is good supervises MA & Turnouts.
d) Full Supervision (FS) Mode :
This mode cannot be selected by Loco pilot, but shall be entered
automatically when all the necessary conditions of operation under
TCAS are fulfilled.
The Loco TCAS unit shall be in the Full Supervision mode when all
train and track data including Static Speed Profile up to 3000m or
movement authority, whichever is less, required for a complete
supervision of the train is available.
In case of new train formation, Loco TCAS shall continue in SR mode
and shall not display any Signal Aspect or Movement Authority till it
crosses two normal RFID tags and one stop signal in OFF condition.
The Loco TCAS unit shall supervise train movements against a
dynamic speed profile.
The Loco TCAS unit shall display the train speed, the permitted
speed, the target distance and the target speed to the loco pilot.
e) Override Mode :
The Override mode enables the train to pass the signal at danger with
Paper Authority.
Entry to override mode shall be selected by the loco pilot duly
pressing OVRD followed by CNFM soft keys on DMI. It can be
entered only when MA<200mtrs & Train is at Standstill.
If MA is extended or after override timeout (Default: 240s), Section
Speed is known & Traffic direction Known it will go to Full
Supervision Mode.
The Loco TCAS unit shall supervise the train movement against a
ceiling override speed (default: 15 Kmph).
It Obeys SoS from Stationary TCAS.
f) On Sight Mode :
The On Sight mode enables the train to enter into a track section that
could be already occupied by another train.
The Loco TCAS unit shall supervise train movements against a
ceiling speed of On Sight Mode (default: 15 Kmph).
Loco TCAS exits from on sight mode: when loco passes LSS+200m or
Gate signal+250m, for all other type of signals after crossing the next
signal at OFF aspect (other than Danger).
g) Trip Mode :
When a Loco TCAS is in FS/LS mode and passes a stop signal at ON
or End of Authority+30m, the loco TCAS unit shall enter into Trip
Mode.
Stationary TCAS shall send SoS to the Loco TCAS unit, then the trip
mode is entered & Loco applies EB continuously. The Loco TCAS
unit shall perform the Standstill Supervision in this mode.
Loco Pilot has to acknowledge by pressing P_TRIP followed by
CNFM soft keys on DMI, then it releases EB.
h) Post Trip Mode :
The Post Trip mode shall be entered by pressing P_TRIP followed by
CNFM soft keys on DMI, then it releases EB.
Loco TCAS unit shall supervise the train against a ceiling speed of
Post Trip Mode (Default: 15 Kmph).
Loco TCAS exits from the Post Trip Mode when the approaching
Stop Signal is crossed at OFF condition.
i) Non Leading Mode :
The Non-Leading mode is defined to manage the Loco TCAS unit of
a slave engine that is either electrically coupled to the leading engine
(remote controlled) or NOT electrically coupled to the leading engine
(not remote controlled)
It shall be entered manually into non leading mode by the Loco pilot
when the train is at standstill.
The Loco TCAS unit shall not perform any train movement
supervision in Non-Leading mode.
j) Reverse Mode :
The Reverse mode allows the loco pilot to change the direction of
movement of the train and drive from the same cab, i.e. the train
orientation remains unchanged.
This mode to be selected by Loco pilot by REV followed by CNFM
soft keys on DMI.
The Loco TCAS unit shall supervise train movements against a
ceiling speed (Default: 15 Kmph), distance (Default: 500m) and time
out (Default: 300s) for which reverse movement is allowed.
It Obeys SoS from Stationary TCAS.
k) Shunt Mode :
Shunt mode shall be selected by the loco pilot and shall only be
accepted when the train is at standstill.
It shall be possible to manually select Shunting from Stand By, Staff
Responsible, Limited Supervision and Full Supervision mode by
pressing SHNT followed by CNFM soft keys on DMI.
Supervises Shunt Mode Speed (Default: 15 Kmph) within shunting
limits.
STCAS generates SoS, if the train crosses the Block Section Limit
l) System Failure Mode :
The Loco TCAS unit shall switch to the System Failure mode in case
of a fault, which affects the functioning of Loco TCAS.
The Loco TCAS unit shall permanently command the Emergency
Brakes, hence Loco TCAS may be switched off (see pt. 02)
m) Isolation Mode :
This mode is resorted by LP during the malfunctioning of the TCAS.
Isolation mode, the Loco TCAS unit shall be physically isolated from
the brakes and shall not perform any train supervision.
There shall be a clear indication on DMI that the Loco TCAS isolated
(Manual Isolation).
5. SOS Generation and Reception:
a. Manual SOS: Whenever Loco pilot detects an emergency situation
and wants to alert other trains, he has to press ‘SOS’ and ‘COMMON’
on DMI simultaneously to generate Manual SOS.
b. Unusual Stoppage SOS: If train stops in block section in spite of line
clear, TCAS asks LP for acknowledgement. He has to
‘Acknowledge/Cancel’ button on DMI within 10 seconds. If not
acknowledged, Loco TCAS broadcasts SOS message and brakes will
be applied.
c. SOS Reception consequences and normalization: Whenever Loco
TCAS receives SOS from any Loco/Station, trains approaching to the
originating source of SOS(within 3000 m of location of SOS
originating station) shall apply brakes and will be stopped, then a
speed supervision of 30 Kmph will apply till the train passes the
source of SOS generation. The normal speed will be restored only in
the following conditions:
i. SOS message is cancelled by the source.
ii. Train/Loco is moved away to more than 1500 m from the SOS
source.
iii. SOS message is not received from the source for more than 3
minutes.
6. Train movement from TCAS section to non-TCAS fitted section:
Loco pilot will be prompted to acknowledge exit from TCAS territory
in stipulated time. On acknowledgement, TCAS will switch to SR mode. If
he fails to acknowledge, brakes will be applied by the Loco TCAS.
7. Prompting for LS mode:
If continuously two tags are missed on the track (track tag data) or
there is a failure of radio communication (station data), TCAS will prompt
loco pilot to acknowledge for entry into LS mode. If Loco pilot
acknowledges within 15 sec, TCAS will enter into LS mode. If he fails to
acknowledge, brakes will be applied by the Loco TCAS.
Note:
1. TCAS is a safety aid loco pilot and would intervene only if LP is not
able to react to the unsafe situations.
2. LP has to follow lineside signals and Caution Orders as per the
prevalent operating rules. The operation of TCAS shall, no way,
infringe/override the rules of normal train operations on zonal
Railway.
