UNIT 3.3.3
SCRAPER

Objective:
To understand how a scraper is used as a method of surface preparation.
A scraper is a universal tool to the painter.
Simple and non expensive tool.
Made from various types of material.
Used in pre-preparation and general preparation.

Scrapers

Scrapers are used extensively in the coatings industry.

Scrapers are used as a method of surface preparation for a number of reasons to remove:

• Flaking paint, loose rust etc.

• Contamination such as dryspray, overspray, grit inclusion etc. from a dried paint film.

• Wood, splinters between coats.

Use of a scraper

A simple animation of a scraper being used on a coated surface.

• A scraper is an ideal tool for removal of dry spray and overspray.

• The scraper can remove light debris from the surface.
• The scraper can be used for removing flaky and loose paint.

As previously discussed the scraper is a universal tool to the painter.

Scraper Removing Flaky Paint

The scraper is:

• Classified as a universal tool due to its many uses.

• Used by most coating operatives for preparing substrates when the surface is bitty, has
dry spray or flaky paint on the surface.
• Most coating applicators will have a scraper at hand during their duties from preparing a
substrate to opening tins of paint.

Use of a Scraper

A scraper is an ideal tool for removing loose and flaking paint from most substrates.

Light scale can also be easily removed by scrapers.

Scrapers must be clean and sharp to work efficiently.

A scraper can cut into a surface and damage the coating if care is not taken.

Flaky or Contaminated Surfaces

A scraper is also useful for removing a flaky or contaminated surface.

Care should be taken with a scraper to ensure it does not cut into the surface or existing coating.

A brush down or even a light abrade may still be necessary on some substrates.

Scrapers are available in a number of sizes as illustrated.

Universal Tool

A scraper is used as an effective method of removing plaster and concrete to flat surfaces.

A scraper is also used for the filling operations to the plaster, concrete or wood surfaces.

A scraper can be used for other things such as mixing fillers and opening tins of paint.

PPE and RPE

There are potential risks when using a scraper.

The object should not be carried in your pocket in case you trip or fall. The blade can be very sharp.

The task will determine the appropriate PPE and RPE.

Select the appropriate level of PPE and RPE to suit the task being performed.

The risk assessment will determine what equipment is necessary.
