SAMPLE PAPER
CLASS – 10
SUBJECT- Science

TIME: 90 Minutes MAX. MARKS: 50

CHEMISTRY 17

1. Select a pair of olfactory indicators from the following: 1

a) Clove oil and vanilla essence
b) onion and turmeric
c) Clove oil and litmus solution
d) vanilla essence and methyl orange
2 Identify the salt formed of reaction between zinc and sodium hydroxide: 1
a) NaOH
b) Na2CO3
c) Na2ZnO2
d) NaZnO2

3 Nitrogen gas is used to prevent rancidity because 1

a) It is a inert gas
b) It is non-reactive gas
c) a and b both
d) none of these
4 Note -Assertion reason questions contain an assertion followed by a reason. 1
Read them carefully and answer the questions based on the following
options–
(a) Both A and R are true, and R is the correct explanation of A.
(b) Both A and R are true, but R is not the correct explanation of A.
(c) Ais true but R is false.
(d) A is false but R is true.
Assertion: Electrolysis of water is electrolytic decomposition.
Reason: No redox reaction is involved during electrolysis of water.
5 2 gm of silver chloride is taken in a China dish and China dish is placed in sunlight for 2
some time. What will your observation be in this case? Write the chemical reaction involved
in the form of balanced chemical equation. identify the type of chemical reaction.
6 Give reason: 3

a) Tooth decay starts when pH of mouth is lower than 5.5.

b) Reaction of acid with non-metal oxides is considered as a neutralization reaction.

(Mention one example)

c) An aqueous solution of an acid conduct electricity.

7 a) Identify oxidizing and reducing agent in the following reactions: 5
i) Fe2O3 + 3 CO--→ 2 Fe + 3 CO2
ii) 4 NH3 + 5O2 --→ 4 NO + 6 H2O

b) On heating blue colour salt of copper in a boiling tube, a black coloured

substance, oxygen gas and brown gas are formed.
i) Identify black colour substance and brown gas evolved.
ii) Write balanced chemical equation.
iii) Name the type of reaction
8 A scale for measuring hydrogen ion concentration in a solution, called pH scale. 3
The p in pH stands for ‘potenz’ in German, meaning power. On the pH scale we
can measure pH generally from 0 (very acidic) to 14 (very alkaline). pH should be
thought of simply as a number which indicates the acidic or basic nature of a
solution. Higher the hydronium ion concentration, the lower the pH value.

i) Three solutions: X, Y, Z have pH value as 14,3,6 respectively. Arrange the

following solutions in order of decreasing concentration of hydronium ions.

ii) Which gas is released when a solution of pH = 2 is reacted with metal

carbonates or metal hydrogen carbonates. Write a chemical test to identify
gas.

iii) Which one has more concentration of Hydronium ions: 1M HCl or 1M

CH3COOH

Biology 17

1. When a few drops of iodine solution are added to rice water, the solution turns 1
blue-black in colour. This indicates that rice water contains

(a) Fats

(b) Complex proteins

(c) Starch

(d) Simple proteins

2 1
The chlorophyll in photosynthesis is used for

(a) Absorbing light (b) Breaking down water molecules

(c) No function (d) Reduction of CO2

3 1
Assertion (A): Bile is essential for digestion of lipids.

Reason ®: Bile juice contains enzymes.

4 Define translocation in reference to plants 2

5 Draw a neat diagram of Human respiratory system labelling trachea, bronchioles 3

and alveoli.

6 (a) Name three types of blood vessels in humans, how are they different from 5
each other.
(b) Name the vessel that carries oxygenated blood from heart to body parts
and the vessel that carries deoxygenated blood from body parts to heart.

7 4
Mahesh was writing a project report on nutrition in different organisms. A study on
the digestive system of different animals showed that the length of the food pipe
or esophagus in different animals are different. The study showed that herbivores
have a longer small intestine as compared to carnivores. He studied the structure
and functions of different parts of the Human digestive system. Based on this,
answer the following questions.

(a) Why do herbivores have longer small intestines?

(b) How is small intestine designed to absorb food.

® Write the main function of large intestine.
(d) Define Peristalsis.

PHYSICS 16

1. Which of the following lenses would you prefer to use while reading small letters 1
found in a dictionary?
(a) A convex lens of focal length 50 cm.
(b) A concave lens of focal length 50 cm.
® A convex lens of focal length 5 cm.
(d) A concave lens of focal length 5 cm
2 To obtain a magnification of, -0.6 (minus 0.6) with a concave mirror, the object must 1
be placed:
(a) At the focus
(b) Between pole and focus
® Between focus and center of curvature
(d) Beyond the center of curvature
3 Assertion(A) : A ray of light travelling from a rarer medium to a denser medium 1
slows down and bends away from the normal. When it travels from a denser
medium to a rarer medium, it speeds up and bends towards the normal.
Reason ® : The speed of light is higher in a rarer medium than a denser medium.

4 Draw ray diagram of situation when coin is placed in water container. 2

5 At what distance from a concave lens of focal length 20 cm, a 6cm tall object be 3
placed to obtain its image at 15 cm from the lens? Also calculate the size of image
formed.

6 A child reads words of a book with the help of a convex lens keeping it close to 5
the book. He finds words enlarged and erect when he gradually withdraws the
lens away from the book. At one position, the words again become distinctly
visible but this time, these are enlarged and inverted.
a) Explain the difference with the help of a ray diagram for both cases.
b) An object is held at the principal focus of a concave lens of focal length f.
Where will the image be formed in this case? Explain.
7 CASE STUDY 3

Read the following and answer the questions given below:

The curved surface of a spoon can be considered as a spherical mirror. A highly

smooth polished surface is called mirror. The mirror whose reflecting surface is
curved inwards or outwards is called a spherical mirror. The inner part works as a
concave mirror and the outer bulging part acts as a convex mirror. The center of
the reflecting surface of a spherical mirror is called pole and the radius of the
sphere of which the mirror is formed is called radius of curvature.
