Introductory Message

For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the Oral Communication Self-Learning Module on Types of Speech

According to Purpose.

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed, and reviewed

by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its Officer-in-
Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A. Agustin, in
partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor, Honorable Victor Ma.

of speech context based on the given
pictures below.

_____________ _____________
_____________ _____________

So, what are the answers? For picture number 1, it’s Intrapersonal, number 2 is
Interpersonal, number 3 is Public and number 4 is Mass communication.

LESSON

What makes a successful speech?

An enthusiastic tone of voice can surely set the right mood; a handpicked
tie might add to your visual appeal; the correct posture will help strengthen your
conviction, and certainly, an oozing confidence shall allow you to capture
attention.
All these may undoubtedly contribute to a speech success, but these
must-haves may not be good enough. You must not forget to set your purpose.
Will you speak to inform, to demonstrate, to persuade, or to entertain?
Knowing and understanding your purpose gives you the right words,
materials, organization, and the manner in which you will deliver it. Besides
being successful, a speech becomes worthwhile when you speak for a purpose.
That is why we have to know the types of speech according to purpose.

Speeches according to purpose are generally classified into four.

1. INFORMATIVE SPEECHES “present” and “clarify” facts and ideas for
audiences. Without clarification and interpretation, information is
meaningless. The informative speaker’s job is to adapt data and ideas to
human needs.
Write an informative speech if you want your audience to:
a. Acquire knowledge about a subject new to them.
b. Learn more about or increase their understanding of a subject
they already know something about.
Read carefully these examples of specific purposes for a speech to inform:
a. To have the audience able to read correctly the various road
safety symbols.
b. To have the audience become aware of recent findings about the
impact of Covid-19 pandemic.
c. To have the audience able to select a college program
appropriate to each individual based on specific criteria.

2. DEMONSTRATIVE SPEECHES “tell” and “show” audience how to

execute actions. The demonstrative speaker’s job is to explain and/or
illustrate processes.

Write a demonstrative speech if you want your audience to:

a. Acquire or improve a skill or their ability to do something.
b. Learn information in steps or phases and be able to perform the
steps themselves.
Throughout your life, you have heard classroom instructions, observed
demonstrations and read guidelines for the performance of special tasks.

3. PERSUASIVE SPEECHES “change” or “reinforce” attitudes or behaviors.

While an informative speaker aims to make listeners understand, a
persuader attempts to influence the listener’s thoughts or actions.

Write a persuasive speech if you want your audience to:

a. modify or change their attitudes or opinions,
b. accept or approve your/one’s point of view, and
c. be motivated to take some specific actions.
Consider these examples of specific purposes for a speech to persuade:
a. to have the audience impressed with the importance of the
opening of a new community library
b. to have the audience agree with your three main reasons for
calling out the government for more funds for medical
professionals
c. to have the audience support their children in pursuing
education even in the time of pandemic

4. ENTERTAINMENT SPEECHES “provide” pleasure or amusement to

audience while delivering a clear message. An entertainment speaker aims
to connect with the audience not only on a cognitive but also at the
affective level.

The speech to entertain is used in rather specialized speaking situations.

a. after dinner speech in which humor is used to be a kind of
entertainment.
b. celebration of the success and completion of work/task.
c. sharing with the audience some stories about the extraordinary
places the speaker has visited in Batanes.
d. comedian’s presentation of speech in the form of monologues.

Guided Practice
On the space before each number, name which purpose the speaker has in mind.

1. The guests will enjoy some stories of my trip to South Korea.

-The purpose of the speaker intends to entertain the guests through his funny
stories and experiences in Korea.

2. The community will know essential and healthy things to do during the
quarantine period.
-It is obvious that the speaker’s purpose is to inform the community.
3. The students will be able to self-troubleshoot their computer’s basic issues.
-This shows that the speaker’s intention is to inform. But this can also be
demonstrative if the speaker shows the process on how troubleshooting is
done.

4. The members of the congress will support the educational improvement plan.
-The speaker is therefore successful on his speech to persuade because he
gains their support to the plan.

5. To have the youth moved to work on researches on community problems.

-The speaker here wants to persuade and motivate the youth to do research.

ACTIVITIES

Activity 1
Identify the type of speech indicated by the following lifted lines. Choose the
correct answer from the word pool below then write it on the space after each
item.

Demonstrative Entertainment
Informative Persuasive

1. Abortion remains to be one of the most debatable topics. There are

people who support the idea that it should be a free choice of every
woman – whether to do it or not, while others claim that no one has a
power to decide, whether to bring a life on the planet, or put an end to
it. As for me, I have done research on the subject and I have come to
believe that there is no other right thing for me, but to choose life.

2. Caffeine is prevalent in our society these days and every few months we
hear about how a study has shown that it is bad for us or good for us.
What are we to believe? _________________

3. Education is definitely important in one`s life. A gift of knowledge can

bring us to the top of our dreams. It leads us to the right path and gives
us a chance to experience abundance in life. ___________________

4. Many a times New Year Resolutions fail because “People try to desperately
run away from their bad behaviors”. Instead of running away from
something, focus on running towards something. The only time running
away from something works is when you are chased by a hungry dog.

5. When giving a gift to someone, it is important to put just as much thought

into gift wrapping as in gift buying. When the recipient sees a beautifully
wrapped present, it increases their excitement about unwrapping the
present. __________________

WRAP-UP

preparing “what” to say.
VALUING

“Whatever words we utter should be chosen with care for people will hear
them and be influenced by them for good or ill.” - Buddha
