"Line Up by Height" Game
“You just saw that when we arranged values — whether it was people by
height or numbers from smallest to largest — there was always a value right
in the middle. That middle value helps us understand what’s ‘typical’ or
‘central’ in a group of numbers. In math, we call this the median.”
Guide questions:
B. Establishing a purpose What is the median, and how do we define it in a data set?
for the lesson How do you compute the median of ungrouped data?
Why do you think it's important to learn about the median, and how can
it be useful in everyday life?
Steven’s scores in English quizzes are 50, 45, 49, 50, and 48. He
scored 49, 45, 40, 48, 47, and 50 in Science quizzes. He wants to
arrange his scores and determine the median or the middle value.
Are you willing to help him?
Questions:
examples/instances of 1. Arrange the scores in English and Science quizzes.
the new lesson
2. What is the middle score in English and Science?
3. What steps did you take to calculate the median?
4. What do you notice when you look at the number of values in the
English data compared to the Science data?
Going back to activity 2, the problem shows the process of determining the
median or middle value of the given data set. Now, let’s find the median
together. English quizzes: 45, 48, 49, 50, 50 Science quizzes: 49, 45, 40, 48,
47, 50
Now, please show me what you've learned. Calculate the median for this
dataset!
D. Discussing new
concepts and practicing
new skills #1
1. Find the median of the given data set 67, 89, 93, 77, 84
Solution:
First, arrange the values. (You may arrange the data in increasing or
decreasing order.)
67, 77, 84, 89, 93
Second, count the numbers in the data set and determine the middlemost
number.
E. Discussing new 67, 77, 84, 89, 93
concepts and practicing
new skills #2 Note that there are 5 numbers in the given data set. Therefore, the middle
number is 84.
2. Find the median of the given data set. 13, 11, 10, 12, 14, 9, 11, 12
Solution:
Second, count the numbers in the data set and determine the middlemost

Note that the given data set has eight numbers. Therefore, there are two
middlemost numbers, 12 and 11
