Main Rules Phys-I

The Physics laboratory course requires students to register and receive a unique lab-ID number for communication and access to the system. Students must complete preparation, in-person measurements, and homework, including pre-tests and post-tests, to earn points for their final mark, which is calculated based on the average of all laboratory works. Additional opportunities for consultation and advanced post-tests are available, with deadlines for completion set at the end of the course.

Main rules of the Physics laboratory course

At the introduction class students register for the course1 and get informed about their
schedule and individual lab works. Each student receives unique lab-ID number,
which will be used to register and login into the physics.area.lv system. This number
should be used for communication with laboratory teachers.

1. General workflow of completing each laboratory work:

1.1. Preparation: Preparation for the laboratory work is the obligatory homework
that should be done before the class. Explanation of physical processes specific
for each laboratory work as well as description of the measurement procedure
is provided with study materials. It is expected for student to understand the
fundamentals of physics. Such knowledge should be acquired individually, in
case of necessity;
1.2. Measurements:
1.2.1. Laboratory work is done in person according to the schedule;
1.2.2. In order to be allowed to start the measurements, student has to prove
readiness for the laboratory work by completing an individual test (pre-
test, see section 2) at the beginning of the class;
1.2.3. Measurement data is recorded in a document (protocol) provided by
teacher after successful completion of the pre-test;
1.2.4. Measurements must be approved by a teacher, signing the protocol
before the end of the class;
1.3. Homework:
1.3.1. Obtained data calculations are done at home by each student individually
and validated in an online submission form, graphs are drawn or printed
on a paper;
1.3.2. Comprehension and analysis of the obtained results are exercised and
validated by completing an online test (basic post-test, see section 3);
1.3.3. Optionally, after a perfect score in the basic post-test, student can
demonstrate higher understanding by completing the advanced post-test
(see section 4);
1.4. Finalization:
1.4.1. Filled and completed protocol is submitted in person on regular or
consultation classes (see section 5.1.);

1
If introduction class is missed, student has to obtain personal lab-ID number at ortus.rtu.lv within a Physics course
page and register for the course at physics.area.lv.
1.4.2. Student may be asked to explain their test answers and general
knowledge about the laboratory work (defending the work);
1.4.3. Each work is evaluated using a point-based system (Figure 1);

(optional)

Figure 1. Evaluation of each laboratory work with points, a minimum of 1 point must be acquired after completing post-tests

1.4.4. The final mark for the course is calculated when all works have been
submitted, it is the average point count of all laboratory works:
𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑝𝑜𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑠 𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑛𝑒𝑑
𝐹𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝑀𝑎𝑟𝑘 =
𝑁𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑐ℎ𝑒𝑑𝑢𝑙𝑒𝑑 𝑙𝑎𝑏𝑜𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑜𝑟𝑦 𝑤𝑜𝑟𝑘𝑠
1.4.5. The final mark below 4 prohibits the attainment of a grade for the entire
physics course.

2. Proving readiness for the laboratory work (pre-test):

2.1. Access to the laboratory work will only be granted after successfully
completing the pre-test, which will be available 10 minutes after the start of
class for those who have registered their attendance;
2.2. Students should find the seat for the pre-test according to the last number or
their lab-ID (Figure 2), this position does not change regardless of the current
laboratory work;
Figure 2. Class seats for the pretest. Numbers are present on the tables.

2.3. Students should have a smart device that is able to connect to the Wi-Fi
(phone, tablet, laptop, etc.);
2.4. Students will have 3 attempts to successfully complete the pre-test within a
15-minute timeframe;
2.5. Students are allowed to access materials on physics.area.lv and use their own
notes, calculator will be necessary;
2.6. Any non-fair actions such as cheating, disrupting other students, or
communicating during the pre-test will result in a penalty;
2.7. Only after successfully completing the pre-test, students will be able to
receive the protocols and start measurements;

3. Analysis of the obtained results in a form of an online test (basic post-test):

3.1. The basic post-test is part of the mandatory homework (see section 1.3) and
is each student's individual work, requiring students to be able to explain their
chosen answers;
3.2. The basic post-test can only be started once the calculation results have been
accepted as correct in the online validation form;
3.3. The test consists of 3 subjects with 2 questions per each, presented in a quiz
format. There is no time limit;
3.4. Each correctly completed subject is worth 1 point, with a total of +3 points
available for a perfect score;
3.5. To successfully complete the basic post-test, at least 1 of the subjects must be
answered correctly;
3.6. Upon completion, students have the option to either accept their score or retry
the test. Note that retries cost 1 point of the score earned after the calculations;
4. Getting more points by doing advanced post-test:
4.1. The advanced post-test is an optional homework;
4.2. The advanced post-test is available after successfully completing the basic
post-test with all questions answered correctly on any try, but not later than the
deadline date (see section 5.2.);
4.3. The test consists of 2 questions in a quiz format and explained in written form.
The student must be able to prove that their chosen answer is not random, but
based on certain facts, calculations, conditions, etc.;
4.4. Formulas and graphics can be attached to the answer as a single graphic
(*.jpg) file;
4.5. The test is time-limited, with 40 minutes allowed for each question and an
unrestricted break in between;
4.6. The submitted answers will be reviewed by the teacher and evaluated with up
to 2 points for each question;
4.7. If a student demonstrates ignorance or complete lack of understanding of the
subject, a penalty point of –1 per question may be received.

5. Additional notes:
5.1. Consultation classes:
5.1.1. Regular consultation classes will be held during the semester, with the
schedule available on physics.area.lv. Limited consultations may be held
after the course ends, with notifications available on the site.
5.1.2. During consultation classes, students can get help with their
calculations and post-tests;
5.1.3. Students have the opportunity to retake one missed or failed laboratory
work per consultation class;
5.2. Deadline:
5.2.1. The deadline date is usually scheduled at the end of the course;
5.2.2. If students finalize all laboratory works by the deadline, they are
eligible for automatic pass in the physics course, additional requirements
for that will be provided by the lecturer;
5.2.3. Students may complete measured laboratory works after the deadline,
but must do so no later than a year after the measurements;
5.2.4. Doing measurements after the course ends requires additional
registration and a fee, info is published on physics.area.lv;
5.2.5. Advanced post-tests will not be available after the deadline date.
