Long ago, far away in the Kingdom of Pasir Batang, there lived two
princesses—Purbasari and Purbararang. Though they were sisters,
their personalities were as different as night and day. Purbasari
was known for her kindness, beauty, and compassion for the people.
She treated everyone with equal respect and always tried to help
people with all she had.
Scene 1
The palace courtyard. A young servant struggles to carry a heavy
basket of fruit. As she walks, she stumbles slightly, nearly
dropping the basket.
Servant
(strained) Ah! I-I’m sorry…!
Purbasari
(rushing forward) Hei it’s okay no need to rush. You may drop all
the fruits. Here let me help you.
Servant
Purbasari
(smiling warmly) Sure, you should watch your steps or else you may
fall and no need to say thank you. It is all my pleasure.
Purbararang
(Purbararang pushed the servant) Why is it taking so long just to
bring me the fruits?!
Purbasari
(Catches the servant) Sister, why are you being so rude? It is not
necessary. She is doing her best.
Purbararang
(Mocking) and her best in not good enough Purbasari. A servant
should work fast!
Purbasari
(calm but firm) She was struggling, and she needed help. Nothing is
wrong with helping her and showing your kindness.
Purbararang
(Rolling her eyes) HAH! You sound just like our father, but remember
Purbasari. Kindness will not take you to the throne.
Purbasari
(surprised) The throne? But Father has not yet decided—
Purbararang
(gritting her teeth) He will. And when he does, it will be me who
rules this kingdom, not you!
Scene 2
King Tapa Agung sits on his grand throne, with serious expression.
Purbasari and Purbararang stand before him.
Purbararang
(smirking) Of course, Father. As your eldest daughter, I am prepared
to take the throne.
Purbararang
What?! You’re giving the throne to her?!
Purbasari
(surprised) F-Father… I—
Purbararang
(interrupts) No! This is a mistake! I am the eldest! I should be the
queen!
Purbararang
(gritting her teeth) This is unfair! I have prepared my whole life
for this! And you give it to her? She is weak! She does not have the
strength to lead!
Purbararang
(voice trembling with anger) You are making a mistake, Father! The
throne belongs to me!
Purbasari
Purbararang
Purbararang
(bitterly) You will regret this, Father. I will never accept this.
Scene 3
Purbararang came to Ni Ronde’s chamber. Ni Ronde sat down on her
room’s carpet. The scent of burning incense filled the room.
Purbararang
Ni Ronde
(calmly) I can see the desperation and hatred in your eyes... Tell
me, Princess, what brings you to my door in the dead of night?
Purbararang
(clenching her fists) My father has betrayed me! He gave the throne
to Purbasari! She took everything—my crown, my father’s favor, the
love of the people... even beauty itself! And what do I have left?
Nothing!
Ni Ronde
Purbararang
(voice low and demanding) You must help me. I want Purbasari gone!
Ni Ronde
Purbararang
(sharply) Then make her unworthy! Make her lose the people's love!
Put a curse on her!
Ni Ronde
Purbararang
Ni Ronde
(leaning in, voice low and deliberate) There is a spell... one that
will take away her beauty, her grace. It will turn her into
something unworthy of the throne. But there is a weakness—it can
only be broken by true love.
Purbararang
(coldly) Then do it. I don’t care about the risks. I only want her
to suffer.

Scene 4
Purbasari
(screams) AAAAAA!
Purbasari
Purbararang
(mocking sympathy) Oh, dear sister... How tragic! You look ugly
Purbasari
(begging) Father, please... help me...
Purbararang
Purbasari
(angry) A curse? What are you saying?! I don’t feel sick—I’m fine!
These must be some tricks!
Purbararang
Purbararang
Father, you must think of the kingdom. This disease could be deadly!
If it spreads, it will endanger the entire palace.
Purbasari
That’s not true. You just want me gone so you can have the throne!
Purbararang
(faking hurt) Me? Oh, dear sister, how could you think such a thing?
I only wish to protect our people! You must exile Purbasari, Father.
It is the only way to ensure the kingdom’s safety.
Purbasari
(pleading) Father, please! You know me. I have done nothing wrong!
Purbasari
(panicked) No... Father, please—
(closing his eyes) You must leave the palace. I have no choice. You
are going to be exiled. (asked the servants) Please take Purbasari
to the forest. She needs to be there until the curse is gone.
Scene 5
Purbasari
(She suddenly steps onto a loose rock. It shifts beneath her, and
before she can react, her foot gets stuck between two large rocks.)
Purbasari
(She tries to pull her foot out, but it's still stuck.)

(story-telling.)
Ni Ronde
One day, the gods told him that it was time for him to marry. His
bride was a goddess chosen by the gods' will. But Sanghyang
Guruminda refused. “I will choose my own fate,” he declared,
rejecting the gods’ decision. He believed love was something to be
found, not forced. His words were seen as rebellion.
Angered by his disobedience, the gods decided to punish him. “If you
do not want to follow the path we have chosen for you, then you
shall take another,” they said. And with that, they sent him down to
Earth, stripping him of his human form. His smooth skin darkened and
his hands became rough. When he opened his eyes, he was no longer a
prince—he was a black lutung, a monkey, doomed to wander the mortal
world.
He cried out to the heavens, begging for forgiveness. But the gods
did not answer. They left him only one message.
“You must find your way back, not with strength, but with love.”
For years, he searched for the one thing that could break his curse:
a true love. The love that was given sincerely, without force,
without expectation.
Now, he still waits, hoping that one day, someone will see beyond
his form and love him for who he truly is. Only then he will be
free.”
Lutung
(grinning) You know, for a royal, you’re surprisingly bad at basic
survival.
Purbasari
Lutung
Purbasari
You never told me… why are you here? You act like this is just your
home.
Lutung
Maybe I like the peace. Maybe I like annoying you. Or maybe… I just
don’t belong anywhere else.

(softly, teasing but sincere) So… does that mean you like me?

Purbasari
(startled, then amazed) Lutung… my face…! Hey, why aren’t you saying
anything?
Lutung
Purbasari, You are……beautiful.(a little flustered) I… I just…
(laughs nervously) I’ve never seen you like this before. Like
someone who belongs in a palace… not in the forest, with me.
Purbasari
(softly) Lutung, I don’t care.I’m happy with you.
Lutung
(hesitant) But you can go back now. You don’t have to stay here.
Purbasari
(smiling) I want to stay. I choose you.
Lutung
(quietly) What if you change your mind?
Purbasari
(teasing) The only thing that changed is my face. My heart is still
the same.
Scene 6
Purbasari was sitting in the tree trunk with Lutung laying his head
there. Then a white pigeon post flew down. A small letter fell on a
tree trunk.
Purbasari
(she gently unfolds the letter. as she reads, her expression changes
from curiosity to deep concern.)
Purbasari
Lutung
Purbasari
(glaring, showing the letter) Lutung, this is serious! The kingdom
is in trouble!
Lutung
(pretending to gasp) Oh no! Did they run out of silk clothes and
gold combs?
Purbasari
(Lutung takes the letter and skims through it. his playful
expression fades into a concerned face.)
Lutung
Wow. Your sister really took the ‘ruler’ part too seriously, huh?
Purbasari
Lutung
Purbasari
Lutung
(raising his eyebrow) Just like that? Walk into the palace and say,
“Hey sis, mind giving me the throne back?”
Purbasari
(squints her eyes) If you have a better idea, I’d love to hear it.
Lutung
Purbasari
Purbasari
(nods) I won’t let my people suffer any longer. It’s time to set
things right.
Lutung
(teasing) Just don’t go flipping the royal carpet, alright? I hear
those things are expensive.
Purbasari
(chuckles) No promises.

Scene 7
Purbararang sat on her throne. Two guards walked into the room.
Servant 1
(bend his knees) Your Majesty, there is someone who wants to meet
you.
Purbararang
(furrowed her brows) Bring them here.
Guard 1
As you command, Your Majesty.
Purbararang
(shocked, widened her eyes) Purbasari?! What are you doing here?!
(in realization) Your face... your skin... How is this even
possible? It has returned to normal!
Purbasari
Yes, sister. My curse has disappeared. I come back to claim what is
rightfully mine, the throne that dad had given to me.
Purbararang
Are you trying to take the throne from me? How dare you?! I have
ruled this kingdom ever since you are absent. This kingdom is mine
now!
Purbasari
I don’t want to fight against you, sister. I only wish to bring back
peace to our kingdom. It is for the good of our people.
Purbararang
What do you know about our people? What do you know about good and
evil? You know nothing, Purbasari.
Purbasari
(gentle but firm) I know how to care and listen to their struggles,
sister. A ruler should listen, not just command. You should see the
real condition of our people. They are suffering. (concern)
Purbararang
If you want the throne, you must prove yourself worthy. I will not
simply hand over my crown.
Purbasari
(gently) I do not want to fight you, but if a test is what you want,
then I will accept it.

The people’s hearts.
Citizen 1
(muttering) Wow, the first smart thing he’s said today.
Citizen 2
(nods) Yeah, I was worried about him for a while.
Purbararang
(throwing her hands up) UGH! This is ridiculous! I refuse to accept
this nonsense!
Indrajaya
(sighs) Honey, please. Just take the loss gracefully.
Purbararang
(grumbles) I am graceful.
Indrajaya
(pointing at her) You’re pouting.
Purbararang
(arms crossed) Fine. Whatever. Enjoy your fairy tale ending. I hope
you two have a magical life together or whatever.
Indrajaya
(relieved) Finally! I’ve been standing here trying to look cool for
way too long. My back hurts.
Purbararang

Scene 10
Purbararang and Indrajaya left the hall. Cheer suddenly filled the
hall.
Citizen 1
Finally! A queen who actually cares about us!
Citizen 2
(nods) And not just about raising taxes on imported silk clothes.
Purbasari
Guru Minda
You were always meant to. You only needed a chance to show them.
Purbasari
(smiles) And you... you're free now. Truly free.
Guru Minda
Free, yes. But most importantly, I get to see you happy, my queen.
Purbasari
Ew, stop.
Guru Minda
Purbasari
Guru Minda
Purbasari
Sure.
And with that, the kingdom finally had its true ruler back.
Purbasari taught us that kindness and sincerity will win in the end,
while greed and arrogance will destroy us, as seen in Purbararang’s
fate. This also reminds us not to judge others by their appearance,
nor to underestimate those who seem weak. Real strength comes from a
kind heart, and real beauty shines from inside. In the end, fairness
won, and peace returned to the kingdom.
