Tutorial 5
Aircraft Stability & Control - AE 31004
1. A high performance aircraft executes a velocity vector roll at a rate of 900 /s, while flying at 100 m/s and an
angle of attack 300 . Determine the acceleration of the aircraft w.r.t an earth fixed inertial system.
2. At time t = 0, the ox0 y0 z0 and ox1 y1 z1 systems coincide and the ox1 y1 z1 system has angular velocity of
387 page1 rad/s w.r.t. the ox0 y0 z0 system. The angular velocity is directed along oz or oz1 axis. A particle has

velocity of V = 50î + 25ĵ + 0k̂ as observed in the ox0 y0 z0 system. What are the velocities and acceleration
as measured in ox1 y1 z1 system measured at t = 5 s?
3. An aircraft is initially in dive and at the bottom of the dive, the pilot effects a steady pull-out with a constant
pitch rate q0 rad/s . Obtain the equation of motion for small disturbances during pull–out.
4. An aircraft with a wing loading of 2000 N/m2 is in a steady level flight with a velocity of 100 m/s. The drag
polar of the aircraft is given by CD = 0.025 + 0.05CL2 . Assuming ρ = 1.25 kg/m3, CL = 0.08 α (deg), lt = 3c̄,
St
S = 0.35, ǫ = 0.35 α (deg), at = 0.06 αt (deg), and ηt = 0.9, determine the stability derivatives CXα , CXu ,
CZα , Czα̇ , Cmq , Cmα̇ .
5. An aircraft wing has the following characteristics: ΛLE = 0, AR = 6, λ = 1.0 , sectional lift curve slope
a0 = 0.1/deg, zero lift sectional drag coefficient CD0 = 0.022, and increase in sectional profile drag coefficient
per degree angle-of-attack CDα,l = 0.001/deg, Assuming that it is a mid-wing configuration, determine Clp ,
Cnp , Clr and Cnr using strip theory for α = 50 , and M = 0.20. Compare your result s with those obtained
using DATCOM method.
6. Estimate the low-speed vertical tail contribution Clp , Cnp Clr and Cnr at an angle-of-attack of 50 using the
following data: lift curve slope av = 0.07/deg, leading edge sweep ΛLE = 0, vertical tail length lv = 9.0 m,
with mean aerodynamic chord c̄ = 3.0, wing span b = 15 m, zv = 0.9 m,ratio of vertical tail area to wing area
Sv
S = 0.20, wing aspect ratio AR = 6, and wing taper ration λ = 0.5.

7. An aircraft is undergoing a steady rotation with angular velocity components in body axes system p = 10 deg/s,
q = 2 deg/s, and r = 5 deg/s. At a certain instant of time, the Euler angles are Ψ = −300 , θ = 100 and
φ = 150 .Determine the corresponding Euler angle rates.
8. An aircraft executes a velocity vector roll at an angle of attack of 400 with angular velocity of 300 /s about
the wind axis. Plot the time history of Euler angles for the first 20 s.
9. An aircraft is flying at an angle of attack of 100 , side-slip of 50 , and a bank angle of 100 . The onboard
accelerometer record axb = 10 f t/s2, ayb = 5 f t/s2 , and azb = −5 f t/s2. Determine the components of
acceleration in the wind axes system.
10. An aircraft model is tested in a low speed wind tunnel at an angle-of-attack of 250 ,side-slip of −50 , bank angle
375 examle of 50 . The internal strain gauge balance records an axial force of 25 lb, a side force of −33 lb, and a normal
-4.5
force of −75 lb w.r.t. the model axes system. Determine the effective angle of attack, effective side slip, lift
and drag forces acting on the model.
11. An acrobatic aircraft flying at 150 m/sand at , executes a body axis roll at a rate of 1500 /s. Determine the
acceleration measured by the onboard accelerometers.
12. An airplane is flying at a velocity of 150 f t/s at and angle-of-attack 120 and side slip angle 20 . It has angular
velocities in pitch, roll, and yaw measured by onboard rate gyros as 100 /s, 50 /s, 100 /srespectively. Determine
the angular velocity rates α̇, β̇, and φ̇ associated with axes system.
13. An airplane flying at an angle of attack below stall angle is in a steady roll at a rate p0 deg/s . Derive the
