Lab Ticker Timer

1) Students will use a ticker timer and tape to measure constant velocity over a distance of 3 meters. 2) They will mark dots on the tape every 0.5 seconds and measure the distance between dots to create a position vs. time data table. 3) From the data table, students will create a position vs. time graph and calculate the slope to determine velocity. They will also calculate velocity between different time intervals and compare the results.

Physics Lab: Measuring Motion Using a Ticker Timer

Outcome 2: Analyze through experiments, graphically and quantitatively, the relationship among displacement, time, and velocity Outcome 5: Use instruments effectively and accurately for collecting data in various experiments

Name: ______________________________________ Date: _________________ Purpose To analyze constant velocity using a ticker timer Materials Ticker timer and tape and Meter Stick Procedure 1. Get a piece of ticker timer tape that is about 3m long from your teacher. Practice pulling this through your timer at a constant velocity. This should take about 5 seconds. 2. When you are ready, turn on the ticker timer and complete the trial. 3. Tape your ticker tape to a desk. Decide which dot to use as your first dot, and mark this dot. Start from here and count over 6 spaces. Continue doing this down the length of your tape. 4. The ticker timer has a frequency of 60 dots/s. This means it would make 6 dots every ______ seconds. 5. Measure from your first dot to the net mark and record this value in a data table. Make sure you are reading the ruler PROPERLY! Time should be the x-value and position should be the yvalue. 6. Once you have your data, complete the questions below. Results and Calculations (include proper units with all answers!) 1. Draw a position vs. time graph (or use technology to create a graph) for your data. 2. Draw a line of best fit and calculate its slope. What does the slope represent? (be sure to include proper units!) 3. a) Using your data table, calculate the velocity between 0s and 1.5 s. b) Using your data table, calculate the velocity between 1.5 and the end of the data table c) Using your data table, calculate the velocity between 0s and the end of the data table. d) Were your results for a, b and c exactly the same? Why or why not? e) Was your answer to c) exactly the same as your answer to 2? Why or why not?

4. A constant slope represents a constant velocity. Sketch a graph that would represent what would happen if you had gone constantly slow for the first half and constantly fast for the second half.
