Module 1: Circles
Word Definition Example
Centre of the The middle point of a circle. It is the
Circle point inside a circle that is the same
distance from each point on the
circle. It is usually indicated as the
letter ‘O’.
In the above diagram, ‘O’ marks the
centre of the circle.
Circumference The perimeter of the circle.
The circumference is the ( red /
blue) line.
Line segment A straight line which is the shortest Circle the line segment(s):
distance between two points.
Diameter Line segment passes through the
centre of a circle with both ends
lying on the circle.
The diameter is the ( red / blue)
line.
2
Radius The line segment joining the centre
of a circle and any point on the
circle.
The radius of the circle is line
segment _____ or ______.
Compasses Tool for drawing circles. It has two
legs, usually one with a needle and
the other one with a pencil lead.
Module 2: Cross Sections of 3-D Shapes
Word Definition Example
Cross-section Faces obtained from cutting
Cut Dissecting a shape across in the
horizontally
pathway parallel to the edge of the
base.
3
Base(s) The top and bottom faces of a 3-D
shape (prisms)
A triangular prism has two bases.
The bottom face of a 3-D shape
(pyramids)
A triangular pyramid has one base
only.
Cone A 3-D shape that has one circular An example of a cone:
base joined to a point by a curved
surface.
Cylinder A 3-D shape that has two circular An example of a cylinder:
bases joined to a curved surface.
Pyramid A 3-D shape that has one base and An example of a pyramid:
four triangular lateral faces meeting
at the top.
4
Cuboid A 3-D shape that has six faces, and An example of a cuboid:
each face is in the shape of either a
rectangle or a square.
Sphere A 3-D shape that has a curved An example of a sphere:
surface only, and it is round looking
from all directions.
Centre of a The cross-sections we get from
sphere cutting a sphere into two identical
halves are the largest and the centre
of each circular cross-section.
Prism A 3-D shape has two bases of the An example of prism:
same size and shape, plus
rectangular lateral faces.
Pyramid A 3-D shape that has one base and An example of a pyramid:
triangular lateral faces meeting at
the top.

Module 3: 3-D Shapes
Word Definition Example
Edge A line where two faces meet.
Vertex A point where three or more edges
meet.
Cube A 3-D shape that has six identical An example of a cube:
squares as faces.
Cuboid A 3-D shape that has six faces, and An example of a cuboid:
each face is in the shape of either a
rectangle or a square.
6
Quadrilateral Four-sided 3-D shape
This is a quadrilateral prism. The two
bases are quadrilaterals
(trapeziums).
Rectangular Rectangles/squares as bases
This is a rectangular prism (cuboid).
The two bases are rectangles.
Lateral face All the sides of a 3-D shape except
its base(s).
A hexagonal prism has six lateral
faces and two bases.
Face Includes base(s) and lateral faces. The hexagonal prism shown above
has eight faces altogether.
Net When a pattern can be folded into a
3-D shape.
This is a net of a ___________.
