Introduction & Thesis Statement

Social media platforms changed communication habits by providing outstanding

connectivity but also creating major disturbances in our daily life routines. Social media
platforms enable simple family and friendship contact especially when family members
live abroad but simultaneously decrease my productivity and divert my focus from study
work and create physical inactivity. People need to consciously manage and develop
awareness about the benefits and intrusions of social media platforms for effective
balance.

Step 1: Summarize Your Current Social Media Usage (200 words)

Part A: List Social Media Networks

My main online platforms are Instagram and Facebook together with YouTube and WhatsApp
but Instagram and YouTube remain my top choices. Through Instagram I can visually share my
moments with loved ones while they show me their day-to-day activities thus keeping me
entertained. YouTube offers academic benefits through its video lectures and audiobook content
which improves my understanding of school material.

My relationships benefit from these platforms yet I recognize their negative impact on study time
because of constant interruptions.

Part B: Describe Platform Usage?

My family in Iran uses WhatsApp for free calls that extend past their intended duration thus
eating up substantial portions of my daily schedule. The entertainment value of Instagram
combined with emotional satisfaction leads me to constant distraction which starts from a brief
notification check and transforms into hours of wasted productivity. YouTube serves as my main
educational tool which simplifies complex mathematical concepts in addition to other academic
subjects. My use of YouTube as a study tool leads to inconsistent academic performance because
it disrupts my ability to concentrate on traditional educational settings.
I monitor these platforms continuously throughout each day but especially during breaks, when I
am awake and most importantly when system notifications stop my studies.

Part C: General Feelings About Social Media

The connection between me and social media exists in a complex balance between positive and
negative aspects. I value how social media links different cultures yet its adverse effects on my
concentration levels along with my productivity remain substantial. I work more efficiently and
feel better focus during activities because I actively stay away from these platforms which
demonstrate their ability to restrict my critical abilities and attention span. The need to establish
notification-free study times emerges as a method to control my social media usage.

Step 2: Track Your Social Media Usage for Two Days

The two-day monitoring period showed important findings about my behavior. The total time
spent daily on YouTube reached 4 hours and 44 minutes where I mainly consumed Dr. Jordan’s
lectures and audiobooks. Facebook usage took up two hours per day and Instagram usage
required one hour daily. My substantial reliance on YouTube educational material becomes
evident through these observations while they expose the extensive time I dedicate to social
media entertainment and social activities.

Step 3: Reflect on Your Social Media Usage (250 words)

The tracking process revealed information that did not surprise me too much. The extensive
educational use of YouTube was expected yet daily platform usage revealed many missed
chances to pursue academic growth and personal development. The textbook’s observation
struck me deeply: "people dwell on the past when their time would more productively be spent
living in the present and planning the future" (Goldsmith, 2023, p. 338). My present habit of
regretting past decisions especially my delayed university enrollment demonstrates that I need to
shift my attention toward constructive work in the present and planning for the future.
Social media disrupts my academic progress and causes disturbances to my sleep patterns
together with diminishing my ability to maintain genuine social relationships. I will adopt
particular methods to block notifications while setting regular study blocks distraction-free
according to Goldsmith's findings about how multitasking reduces efficiency (Goldsmith, 2023,
p. 398).

My communication patterns have evolved due to social media because I now use digital
messaging instead of meeting people in person. The platforms enable meaningful family
interactions through distance but they sometimes substitute more personal deep and engaged
communication. The textbook concepts about information overload and information anxiety
match my personal experiences which confirm the need to approach digital content with purpose.

Although social media builds emotional relationships it makes users feel useless when they see
enhanced online representations of others. Conducting this exercise led me to become more
conscious of my digital activities thus helping me interact with greater intent while doing away
with aimless screen scanning.

Social media success requires both deliberate involvement approach alongside developed usage
routines to blend its positive aspects with reduced performance reduction and self-improvement
challenges.
