Course Description:
In this course, we will cover four areas of the present-day ministry of Jesus: High Priest,
Advocate (Lawyer), Intercessor, and Shepherd.

Course Materials:
 The Holy Bible, King James Version
 Handouts as provided by the Instructor

Course Objectives:
Students will learn a broad range of topics, such as:

 Jesus, Our High Priest


 Jesus, Our Advocate
 Jesus, Our Intercessor
 Jesus, The Great Shepherd
 The Condition of the Flock

Course Attendance Policy:

I. Bible Text: Eph. 4:8-15

A. Four areas of the Present Day Ministry of Jesus:

1. High Priest – Hebrews 9:11

2. Advocate (Lawyer) – 1 John 2:1

3. Intercessor – Hebrews 7:25

4. Shepherd – John 10:1-16

B. He is fulfilling His ministry (through all) He began on earth. (Ephesians 4:10)

1. Jesus is the sum total of all the ministry gifts.


a. Pastor – Hebrews 13:20
b. Apostle – Hebrews 3:1
c. Prophet – Matthew 21:11
d. Teacher – Mark 6:6
e. Preaching Healing Evangelist –Matthew 9:35

C. Jehovah - Ra-ah (The Lord our Shepherd) in the Old Testament (Psalm 23:1)

1. God directly led His people in the Old Testament (Exodus 13:21-22; Exodus 40:34-
38)
D. Jesus our Shepherd – John 10:10-16, 27-29

1. Sheep need to be led – Matthew 9:35, 36

2. Laid down his life – John 10:11

3. The sheep know Jesus – 1 John 2:18-20, John 10:4-5

4. The sheep must hear, follow, and obey – John 10:27


5. The Shepherd provides eternal life – John 10:28a
6. The sheep will not miss heaven – John 6:37

E. Today, Jesus is leading us through the under-shepherd. (1 Peter 5:1-4)

F. God's laws are written on the tablets of our hearts. (Hebrews 8:10)

G. We don't need a priest to go to the Lord or to know Him. (Hebrews 8:11)

H. Hebrews 9:13-18 (Amp.) – Jesus' death makes the New Covenant possible.

I. 2 Corinthians 5:17, 21 – ministry of reconciliation

J. Hebrews 4:14-16 – Jesus is a heavenly High Priest

K. Hebrews 8:12, 10:14 – sins are forgiven, sanctified

L. We shall go to a judgment of rewards, not sin. (Hebrews 9:28)

II. Jesus, Our High Priest


A. Jesus is the High Priest of our confession and the New Covenant.

1. He is watching over our words to perform them. (Hebrews 3:1, 4:14)

2. Jesus is the enforcer of the New Covenant. (Hebrews 9:15-17, 7:22, 4:14-16)

B. Functions of Natural Priesthood. (Lev. 16:1-22; Hebrews 5:1-5, 9:1-10 [Amplified])

1. Chosen by God to offer sacrifices for the sins of people.

2. Levites were the only ones who could minister in the Tabernacle.

3. Once a year, He offered in the Most Holy Place blood for himself and the sins of the
people. Atonement (covered)

4. The various offerings, sacrifices, washings, and meals observed were outside the
Most Holy Place on a daily basis.

III. Jesus is the Eternal Priesthood. (Hebrews 7:11-28, 8:1-3 [Amplified])

A. The Levitical Priesthood was by the Law; both the Law and the Levitical Priesthood have
passed away. vs. 11,12

B. The eternal priesthood was established by an oath. vs. 20-21

C. Levites come and go, but JESUS lives forevermore!


D. Jesus entered into the Holy Place once and for all. v. 27
E. Jesus ministers in the true Tabernacle in heaven, not in the earth. Hebrews 8:2

IV. Why we needed a Priest from Heaven. (Hebrews 10:4; John 20:17)

A. Adam's sin had reached Heaven. (Hebrews 9:19-24)

V. The Result of the High Priestly Ministry of Jesus Christ

A. A better Covenant (Hebrews 8:6)

VI. Jesus, Our Intercessor

A. An intercessor is one who intervenes between two parties.

1. Abraham and Sodom. (Genesis 18:26-32)

2. Moses and the Israelites. (Exodus 32:7-14)

3. Before God pleading on behalf or in the place of another. (Ezekiel 22:30; Isaiah
59:16)

4. Between Satan and a person battling. (Isaiah 59:16-17; Ephesians 6:10-18;


Galatians 4:19)
B. Jesus intercedes for our sin. (Hebrews 7:25)
1. He took our place on the cross. (Isaiah 53:7-12, 2; Corinthians 5:21)

2. The anguish of Calvary. (Hebrews 5:7; Matthew 26:36-44; Luke 22:40-44)


C. Jesus intercedes for our maturity as believers. (Romans 8:27, 34)

1. Prayer in Jesus' name is taking advantage of His office as mediator. (John 14:13-14,
16:23, 24, 26)
D. Jesus and Holy Spirit in one accord (They overlap in intercession). (John 16:13-14)
1. Jesus knows our hearts.

2. Our spirit knows the things that pertain to us. (1 Corinthians 2:11)
3. The Holy Ghost knows God's perfect will for us.
E. Jesus intercedes for our conformity to His image of:
1. Conquerors – Romans 8:35-37

2. Lovers – Jude 20-21

3. Mature sons of God – Romans 8:29


NOTE: Jesus is constantly interceding for us. He never gets weary; therefore, we can
receive an unceasing benefit from His prayer ministry.

VII. Jesus, Our Advocate (1 John 2:1, 1 John 3:20)

A. An advocate is one called to aid another; in a court of justice, it denotes a legal assistant,
counsel for the defense, or one who pleads another's cause: a lawyer. Jesus, through His
becoming sin for us, is functioning continually as an advocate for us in the presence of
God.

B. Without this ministry of forgiveness and restoration, we could never mature as believers
or know God's peace. (Luke 15:11-24)

C. Jesus has experienced life as we are living now!

1. Hebrews 4:16 - He knows there will be times of need.

2. Hebrews 2:16-18 - Jesus is both God and man. Jesus came not to condemn drug
addicts, prostitutes, etc. He knows how easy it is for the natural man to be captivated
by sin.
D. Relationship vs. Fellowship

1. Advocate ministry deals with our fellowship. (1 John 1:1-10)

2. He is the propitiation (The extinguisher of guilt incurred by sin). (1 John 2:1-2)

3. Jesus is our Justifier. (Romans 3:26)

VIII. Great Shepherd

A. A Constant Ministry of restoring us.

IX. Conditions of the Flock

A. When Jesus saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them because they
fainted and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no Shepherd. (Matthew 9:36)

X. A PSALM OF DAVID

THE LORD is my shepherd; Blessings (The Lord as Shepherd)

I shall not want (No Lack)

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: (Rest in choice green pastures)

He leadeth me beside the still waters. (Guidance)

He restoreth my soul: (Restoration)

He Leadeth me in the paths of righteousness (Guidance)


for His name's sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley (Shepherd's watch, companionship


of the shadow of death, I will fear no and protection)
evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and (Protection, defense)
thy staff, they comfort me.

Thou preparest a table before me (Provides)


in the presence of mine enemies;
thou anointest my head with oil; (Anoints with Oil of Holy Spirit)
my cup runneth over. (Abundance of provision)

Surely goodness and mercy (Confidence)


shall follow me all the days of my life:

and I will dwell in the house of the Lord (Faith)


forever.

Note: A constant ministry of restoring, comforting, causing us to walk in peace, providing for us,
and anointing us with the oil of the Holy Spirit.
