The regulator is a self contained mechanical device
which is activated by the fluid flowing through it

Why use regulators?

1) Engineers, agree that the simpler a device is the more reliable it is. Every component has a probability of
failure and the probability of failure of a system is the sum of all the probabilities of its components. The fewer
and simpler the components the lower the failure probability.

2) Regulators are simple so they are cheap, and require simple maintenance so they have low servicing costs.

3) Regulators are self-contained and self-operated control devices. They don’t need any type of external
power supply, transmitting instruments on control instruments

4) Regulators speed of response is quicker then a control valve that for some application cannot react fast
enough to the changes to avoid potentially serious issues during the operation.

Self Operated Regulators are suitable for all those applications where:

- the set point is mainly constant over a long time during the operation.

- a possible deviation of the controlled pressure is acceptable.

Pressure reducing regulators

A pressure reducing regulator maintains a desired downstream pressure while providing the required
flow to satisfy the load or user demand. This pressure maintained by the regulator is the outlet
pressure setting (setpoint) of the regulator.

Direct-operated regulators are the simplest devices available for downstream pressure control. They
are available with internal or external pressure sensing and can have a flow to open or flow to close
design

Direct-operated pressure reducing regulators can be designed only with a spring to open layout so the
only possible failure modes are:
• Spring failure: Regulator closes
• Diaphragm failure: Regulator opens

Definitions: detail – Relief / Backpressure regulators

Relief Valves and Backpressure Regulators:

• Relief valves and Backpressure regulators are the same devices. The
different name is determined by the application.

• Relief valve: A pressure relief valve limits pressure buildup (prevents

overpressure) in a system. The relief valve opens to prevent a rise of
inlet pressure in excess over a desired limit. The pressure at which
the relief valve begins to open is the relief pressure setting.

• Backpressure regulator: A backpressure regulator maintains a desired

upstream pressure by varying the flow in response to changes in
upstream pressure. The upstream pressure maintained by the
regulator is the pressure setting (setpoint) of the regulator.
Relief / Backpressure Regulators

Set pressure:

• Relief valve: pressure at which the relief valve begins to open .

• Backpressure Regulator: pressure at which the regulator supplies the

requested operating capacity.

• Relief valves are NOT safety relief valves.

Definitions: detail – differential pressure regulators

Differential pressure regulators

A differential pressure reducing regulator maintains a desired downstream pressure with respect to a
reference pressure other than the atmospheric while providing the required flow to satisfy the load or
user demand.

A differential pressure backpressure regulator maintains a desired upstream pressure with respect to a
reference pressure other than atmospheric by varying the flow in response to changes in upstream
pressure.

According to the two descriptions given above the two type of regulators operate as the regulator a
described previously, but instead of having as reference the atmospheric pressure they can reference
the set pressure to the pressure in a vessel or in a pipe.

This pressure maintained by the regulator is the setting (setpoint) of the regulator, and it is relative to the
reference pressure,
it is NOT a gauge pressure as usually referred to. The failure modes are analogous to the previously
described relative to the pressure reducing and backpressure regulators.

Functional Test – ITC 010 Pressure Reducing / ITC 009 Back Pressure

- Preliminary bench setting (in Carraro)

The purpose of the Carraro bench set is to load the spring in order to achieve the set pressure
(outlet pressure for a reducer, Inlet Pressure for BackPressure-Relief), with a minimum of capacity
flowing. This means that the valve is almost closed.
Carraro sets the start-to-bubble point:
the beginning of opening stroke, after being in shutoff condition

- Accurate setting (on the plant) in Operating Conditions

In general, this flow condition is different from the operating flow condition.
If the user did not modify the spring load condition, he would see an operating pressure lower than
the set one. Hence the final user has to carry out the accurate and final setting on the plant, in
operating conditions.

4 SHUT OFF DEVICE NOT APPLICABLE

Self Operated Regulator is not a shutoff device.
In fact shutoff device needs an external source, like the Control Valve, in which the main body is
separated from the actuator, that is feeded with external signal.
The self actuated valves operate using like actuator signal the same work fluid that flows through
valve body.

15 EXTERNAL SENSING
In that case connect the to the pressure sensing downstream at a distance servomotor of at
least 10 times pipe diameter ‘D’.
The pressure sensing must always be connected to the side of the main pipe or on top of it,
never underneath, otherwise solid substances may obstruct the pressure sensing.
Regulators selection & sizing Criteria
Preliminary Calculation

Data necessary to calculate the Cv

 Fluid & characteristic ( Liquid – Gas – Steam )

 Temperature ( To identify the right material )

 Inlet pressure ( To identify the right body rating )

 Outlet pressure ( Only on backpressure valve is different than set pressure)

 Flow Rate ( To determine the CV value )

 Linesize & Schedula ( To calculate speed & noise level )
