Time: 180 Minutes Max.Marks: 100
PART-A (10X2=20 Marks)
Answer all the questions

1. What is modulation?
2. What is the Hilbert Transform of an impulse function, ?
3. Define sampling theorem.
4. What is use of a compander?
5. What is Hamming Bound?
6. State any two properties of a (n,k)linear block code.
7. Differentiate between coherent and noncoherent receivers.
8. What is Minimum Shift Keying?
9. What is inter symbol interference (ISI}? Illustrate it with a sample data.
10. The output signal to noise ratio of a12-bit PCM is expected to be 40 dB, but it
was found to be 26 dB. For enhancing the SNR towards the expected value the
number of quantization 10 levels have been increased. Find the fractional
increase in transmission bandwidth required for enhancing the SNR.

PART-B (5X13 = 65 Marks)

Answer any four questions
11. a)i) State and illustrate Hilbert transform. ii) State and prove any three
properties of Hilbert transform. iii) Find the Hilbert transform of the function
g(t)=m(t) sin(2ft), given that m(t) → M(f). (OR)
b).i) Elaborate on pre-envelope and complex envelope amplitude
modulation techniques. Ii) Derive the mathematical expressions for DSB-SC
and SSB-SC modulated signals.

12. A)i) Compare PAM, PPM and PWM. (6)

ii) If the analog signal to be quantized (unipolar quantization with 4 bi.ts) has a
range from O V to 10 V, determine number of quantization level, quantization
step (resolution), quantization error when. the analog input is 7.4 V
quantization level when the analog voltage is 7.4 V, and its binary code. (OR)
b) (i) Differentiate between TDM and FDM. Give one application for each
(ii) Consider the signal x(t)=ej20πt + ej30πt", where ‘t ' is in seconds. A new signal
y(t) = x(2t + 6) is formed. Find out the Nyquist sampling rate of y(t).

13. A) Derive the expressions for quantization noise, receiver noise and overall
signal-to-noise ratio of a DM system.(OR)
b) Explain the operation of a cyclic code (7,3) with a suitable generator
polynomial

14. a) Derive the probability of error for Binary FSK modulation scheme and
compare its BER performance with that of BPSK modulation scheme.. (OR)
b) Derive the exp, reseion for the bit error probability of a QPSK system.

b) What is Intersymbol Interference (ISI)? What are the ways to reduce ISi?
Discuss in detail

PART-C (1X15 = 15 Marks)

Answer all questions

16. a) Let m(t) = cos[(4π*103)t] be the message signal and c(t)=5cos[{2π*l0 6)t] be
the carrier signal. c(t) and m(t) are used to gene ate an FM signal. If the peak
frequency deviation of the generated FM signal is three times the transmission
bandwidth of the AM signal. Then, calculate the coefficient of the term.
cos[4π(1006*103)t] in the FM signal in terms of the Bessel coefficients.
(OR)
b) An analog voltage signal with maximum significant frequency of lkHz and
voltage range of 0 to 5 V. is to be digitally encoded with a resolution of
0.005%. To avoid the loss of information, calculate the following:
(i) Minimum sampling rate required
(ii) Minimum number of bits in the digital code
(iii)R.M.S value of the quantization .noise
(iv)Signal to quantization .noise ratio (SQNR) in DB.
