Year 6 Science Homework-09-04-2024

Part A- Forces and Electricity. (TUESDAY-APRIL-2024)
1. What units are used to measure mass?
2. What units are used to measure weight?
3. When an astronaut stands on a weighing scale on earth, the scales read
70kg. The astronauts travels to planet which has half the gravitational
force on earth.
i)What is the astronauts mass on earth?
ii) What is the astronauts’ weight on earth?
iii) What is the astronauts mass on planet X?
iv) What is the astronauts’ weight on planet X?
4. Arum is investigating floating and sinking. HERE ARE THE
THINGS HE USED.[basin, plastic duck toy, water]
i) Draw a force diagram to show a plastic toy duck floating on water.
Label the forces.
ii) Draw a force diagram to show a stone sinking in water. Label the
forces.
iii) Explain why the toy duck floats and the stone sinks.
5. Zara made a circuit using a cell with 3volts, a switch and buzzer. Draw
a circuit diagram of the circuit that Sofia made.
ii) Identify why this is a series or parallel circuit. Explain why.
iii) When they added a second buzzer to the circuit the buzzers did not
work. What could they add to the circuit to make the buzzers work?
iv) How could they change the circuit, without adding components to
make both of the buzzers work? Draw a circuit diagram of your answer.
PART B – THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM [Wednesday 10-April, 2024]

Investigate breathing
We breathe in and out about 16 times every minute. The number of
times we breathe in and out in one minute is called breathing rate. Our
breathing rates change depending on how much oxygen our bodies
need.
You will need a timer or watch with a second hand.
Steps.
1. Count the number of breaths you take in per minute while at rest.
Record the measurement in a table.
2. Run on spot for two minutes and then stop
3. Count and record the number of breaths you take per minute.
4. Wait for two minutes and measure and record your breathing rate
again. Do this again after another two minutes.
5. Draw a line graph of your breathing rate.
6. How did the exercise affect your breathing rate? Suggest a reason for
this.
7. Use a graph to predict how long it would take for your breathing rate
to get back to normal after you stopped exercising.
8. Use your results to write a conclusion for the investigation.
9. Suggest one factor that could affect a person’s breathing rate. Think
about athletes and sports players.
10. Which type of scientific inquiry did you use for this investigation?
11. Name another body system you have learnt about that is also
affected by exercise.
PART C – THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM [THURSDAY 11-April, 2024]

1. What is respiration?
2. Write the word equation for the respiratory system.
3. What is the main function of the respiratory system?
4. Why do we need oxygen in the bodies?
5. In which part of the body does blood get oxygenated?
6. Use the model to answer the questions below. Draw it in your book

a) Which part of the model represents each of the following parts of the
respiratory system? a] lungs b] chest cavity c] windpipe d]diaphragm
muscle.
b) Which of the chest are involved in breathing but not shown in the
model?
c) Explain how your model shows the breathing process.
d) Explain why the model of the lungs is not a real thing.
