POST OIL SPILL ACTIONS

Recommended procedure to minimise the effect of an oil spill

ACT QUICKLY
Pollution control
Stop pumping. equipment Wear protective clothing.
Inform the Officer of the Watch immediately
Scuppers must be plugged. Οil flow overboard must be prevented
at all costs.
In hazardous situations, fire prevention
and extinguishing equipment must be ready to use. Prepare and where possible start
Notify appropriate Authorities as necessary. clean-up operations using the available
shipboard materials and equipment.
Refer to SOPEP Procedures for spilt oil.

Place "No Smoking" and "No Naked Lights" signs. The residue. and materials whi ch wer e
cleaned up, must be carefully stowe d
prior to disposal.

ACT QUICKLY
Stop pumping. Close the necessary
sea water suctions immediately.
Locate source of the leak.
Oil must be transferred from affected tanks.
Check and record tank soundings.

Monitor movement of spilt oil.


Manoeuvre up-wind and away from coast.
Act promptly to all commands
from Officer-in-Charge.

Refer to SOPEP pocedures for spilt oil. Evaluate the damage.

Notify appropriate authorities


for relevant communication numbers.
Monitor and record oil spill movement.
Place "No Smoking" and "No Naked Lights" signs.

Warning: The International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from ships (MARPOL 73/78) plan to achieve the complete elimination of international pollution of the marine environment by
oil and other harmful substances. Strict Regulations are now in force. By following the Regulations and complying with the common sense working practices listed above, damage to the
environment will be greatly reduced. REMEMBER HEAVY FINES AND CIVIL PENALTIES WILL BE IMPOSED IF THE REGULATIONS ARE IGNORED!
