Course Description
This course introduces the student to the sole proprietorship, partnership, and corporate forms of
ownership. This course also familiarizes the student with recording, classifying and interpreting
financial data for service and merchandising businesses. It includes a study of the journals, ledgers
and financial statements used by these entities. Also covered are computerized accounting systems,
internal control, ethics, cash, accounts and notes receivable, merchandise inventory, plant assets and
intangible assets, liabilities, and equity accounts. Basic managerial accounting topics are also
introduced.
Wild/Shaw, 2020
This course also requires completion of homework and other assignments using a product
called "Connect" as well as completing reading assignments from the textbook.
You are also advised to have completed Math 20 Intermediate Algebra with a passing grade.
In addition, the following computer skills will enable you to complete all required assignments in this
class:
1. Your level of computer proficiency should enable you to take an online course, which includes the
completion of homework using an online homework system.

2. You will need to be able to master the use of a homework management software application to
complete your weekly homework.
3. Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel (how to set up worksheets, basic formatting in a
worksheet, add or delete worksheets, save files and attach files) may be helpful.
4. You will also need to follow written instructions within the course.
5. You will need to provide your own computer equipment and internet access. You will need to
access the course and SMC email account, routinely, to participate and be informed of any
potential course updates.
6. You will, at times, have to be patient and calm. As we are working in an internet environment over
which neither instructor nor student has complete control, we all must make allowances for
technical glitches. Please report all technical problems to both the helpdesk and the instructor
at your earliest convenience.

Student Learning Outcomes explain what our institution expects each student to "walk away" with
after completing this course.
1. Student will be able to record, classify and interpret financial data and prepare reports for service
and merchandising businesses
2. Student will complete a comprehensive accounting cycle problem, including transaction recording,
posting, summarizing period results in a trial balance, making adjusting and closing entries, and
preparing the related financial statements.
3. Demonstrate a level of engagement in the subject matter that reveals their understanding of the
value of the course content beyond the task itself, specifically as it relates to linking the relevance
of course content to careers in business and accounting and their personal lives.
Course Expectations
For those of you taking your first online class, note that online education is NOT as personal as the
traditional lecture format. You need to be a self-motivated student who is able to learn from the
written word. Do not blame yourself if it does not work out! Accounting can be a tough course in
the online learning environment.
Everyone comes to the class with different expectations. This online course DOES duplicate the
content of the traditional course, but NOT the delivery. Thus, there are no scheduled on-campus or
on-line class periods (other than the periods of time in which quizzes or exams must be completed).
An online course relies on a self-directed student completing the assignments, readings, and
threaded discussions on his/her own time schedule while meeting the posted deadlines. You need
to be able to learn primarily from the written word in the online environment. Students are also
responsible for adhering to course changes that may be posted at any time in the Announcements
section of the course. A successful student in this course is one who performs at their potential,
welcomes change and is willing to assume responsibility for his or her progress.
You will be provided with the tools to learn the material. To complete your work, you will need a
reliable internet connection and the compatible computer equipment. Be sure you have a
back-up plan for computer access if you have trouble with your computer or wifi. You may
need to use an internet cafe or library for access if you have technical trouble at home.
Please take the online tutorials offered by Canvas and follow their guidelines regarding hardware and
software. If you have technical problems during the semester, you will need to rectify them as soon
as possible. You need to make sure that you are using browsers that will work for Canvas and for
McGraw Hill Connect. Update your computer immediately.
It is very easy to fall behind in an online class. We will have one midterm and a final. Therefore, it is
very important that you get the necessary resources (textbook, Connect and other course resources)
to ensure that you are able to complete any assignments and quizzes that are scheduled. The entire

course is asynchronous which means that it can be accessed at your convenience. The only
requirement is that you complete assignments and exams by the deadline dates - no
extensions.
Students may drop this course and receive a “W” at any time prior to the W deadline week. After that
week, a “W” is not guaranteed. Each student should familiarize themselves with the SMC withdrawal
policy. On the other hand, I reserve the right to drop you from the course if you are not participating
at a level that shows integrity and the intent to succeed in the course.
You are expected to visit the course website several times a week--ideally, once a day.
On Canvas you will find announcements, lecture material, assignments, resources and exams.
Please ask any questions about class by sending me an email after you have read this syllabus. Use
the discussion to share questions and suggestions with your classmates. You may also find the
FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) materials, located in the Course Home section, helpful.
Due to the pace of the class, I will be unable to accommodate you if you have computer
problems. There are no extensions allowed for assignments. It is your responsibility to find a
working computer and wifi in order to complete assignments and test on time.
I would advise you to have an alternate plan in case the computer that you normally use is not
working properly. It is recommended that you print a hard copy of these and other course policies for
reference purposes during the course of the semester. This hard copy will prove extremely helpful in
instances where you are unable to access the course by computer.
General Policies:
You can ask questions or make observations about the chapter material in the Q&A section of the
corresponding chapter. Often times, one of your classmates will answer the question for you. I
monitor the discussions and will get back to you if your question has not been addressed or was not
sufficiently answered by one of your fellow classmates. Please email me directly with any questions
that do not get answered.
General questions about protocols, course requirements or the location of items within the course (or
to point out typos or possible errors) can be e-mailed to me. During quizzes and exams (Friday-
Sunday), your ability to ask questions will be limited. You may NOT ask questions or
make comments about quizzes or exams during the applicable period in which they are being
administered. This includes talking about how long or complex the exam may have been to you
since all students may not have completed the exam. Be advised, that with respect to quizzes and
exams (midterm/final), I normally will not respond to specific questions until I have graded the
exams.
If you have a question about an EXAM item, however, please ask it in email.

Personal issues, special requests, and registration problems should also be handled in email.
You may communicate with me directly via e-mail at [email protected]. To ensure that your e-mail
is read, you must identify yourself in the subject line of any e-mail.
Please do not e-mail homework or other attachments to me. I do NOT open attachments sent with
emails.
Netiquette
Basic netiquette rules of interpersonal respect and decent language apply in any communications
with the instructor, e-college, SMC administration, or classmates. Please respect the privacy and the
sensibilities of others in this course. Do not invade the privacy of your fellow students by
sending unsolicited e-mails. Do not e-mail the class list if you have a question. This is not
appropriate. Any questions that you have should be addressed in the discussion threads or by e-
mailing me.
This is a business course. Therefore, you should communicate as if you are in a business
environment. Emails and posting to the online discussion should be prepared with using proper
grammar, etc. In addition, raging, swearing, and gossiping will not be considered acceptable
communication in this class. You will lose your email privileges and may lose your right to complete
the course with a passing grade if you violate basic netiquette.
Therefore, it is important that you assess the requirements of this course and your own personal
calendar NOW so that you will be able to plan ahead. Look honestly at your outside commitments
and the course requirements. If you have significant outside commitments (work, family, travel,
etc) that would affect your ability to consistently access and participate in the course, you
should probably consider taking this class at another time. Only you can answer this question.
Please review the syllabus with respect to your own calendar, particularly noting the specific dates
that weekly quizzes are given and that assignments are due. There will be no early or make up
exams or quizzes or extra credit. Therefore, it is important that you make note of quiz and exam
schedules and any schedule modifications. If a scheduling conflict arises, please inform the
instructor immediately.

I protect honest and ethical students and actively enforce the SMC Academic Code of Conduct and
the SMC Honor Code. During the enrollment process, you affirmed the following statement: "In the
pursuit of the high ideals and rigorous standards of academic life, I commit myself to respect and
uphold the Santa Monica College Honor Code, Code of Academic Conduct, and Student Conduct
Code. I will conduct myself honorably as a responsible member of the SMC community in all
endeavors I pursue." You are responsible for familiarizing yourself with the various codes. Please be
extremely careful that you do not engage in any behavior that could even be construed as cheating.
Because this is an online course, you must do your own work, and you may NOT share course
material with anyone else, under any circumstances. Any coursework (including homework, projects
and exams) that appears suspicious or "irregular" will be investigated and possibly referred to the
campus disciplinarian, if necessary. All course material is the property of SMC and e-college.
The deadlines for each homework assignments are listed in the course materials. The details of the
assignments are found in Connect. The Discussion Board is on Canvas.
Title IX Statement
Santa Monica College and the Business Department welcome students from all over the world with
various backgrounds and life experiences. SMC is committed to fostering a safe and productive
learning environment. SMC has zero tolerance for discrimination, and/or sexual harassment, which
includes sexual misconduct such as, domestic and dating violence, sexual assault, sexual
exploitation, and stalking. Any sexual violence or physical abuse, as defined by California law,
whether committed by an employee, student, or member of the public, occurring on college-owned or
controlled property, at college-sponsored or supervised functions, or related to or arising from college
attendance or activity is a violation of District policies and regulations, and is subject to all applicable
punishment, including criminal and/or civil prosecution and employee or student discipline
procedures.
SMC Students assume an obligation to conduct themselves in a manner compatible with the
college’s function as an educational institution, which respects the rights of others to learn, and to
acknowledge the academic freedom to teach and communicate in an environment that fosters
learning and creativity. With that in mind, it is important to keep a respectful tone and attitude when
communicating and interacting with your colleagues. You are the only you. No one else will have your
sensibilities of what is funny or interesting. Part of being respectful is also realizing that someone else
may be offended by something you think is “every day normal.”
Students who have experienced some form of sexual misconduct or discrimination are encouraged to
talk to someone about their experience, so they can get the support they need. To learn more about
support available for students, please call 310-434-4225 or 310-434-4415 .

Campus Emotional Support for Students: Over the course of the semester you may face difficult
circumstances beyond your control, such as strained relationships, increased anxiety, alcohol/drug
problems, feeling down or depressed, or having difficulty concentrating. These challenges may create
barriers to learning or may make it difficult for you to meet some of the course requirements. If you or
someone you know is suffering these or other similarly difficult circumstances, please reach out for
support. The staff and faculty of Santa Monica College want you to succeed academically and care
about your wellbeing. You may contact the College’s Center for Wellness and Wellbeing (LA 110,
310-434-4503, [email protected]), which provides short-term mental health services, community
referrals, and a 24/7 emotional support line for students, 800-691-6003. Or, if the situation is an
emergency, you may contact the SMC Police Department (310-434-4000 or the SMC LiveSafe app).
Please contact me if you want to discuss which SMC service or support might be best for you.
Methods of Presentation
