Course Objectives:
1.To Explain the importance and usage of water as basic material in almost all the industries;
interpret drawbacks of steam boilers and also how potable water is supplied for drinking purposes.
2.To gain the knowledge on Polymer based materials in household appliances, automotive
industries and preparation, moulding methods.
3.To analyze the applications of liquid crystals and conducting polymers and to Understand
various synthetic methods of nonmaterials, carbon fiber for modern advances of engineering
technology.

4.To learn the basic principles and applications of Electrochemistry and to understand the
mechanism of corrosion and how factors effect on rate of corrosion.
5.To Design models for energy by different natural sources.

COURSE OUTCOMES: At the end of this unit, the students will be able to;

1.Analyze the importance and usage of water as basic material in almost all the industries;

UNIT I – WATER TECHNOLOGY


Introduction to hard water and calculation of hardness. requirements-Specifications for drinking
water, Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and World health organization (WHO) standards.
Introduction to boiler feed water- formation of deposits scale and sludge in steam boilers
disadvantages and prevention of deposits, caustic embrittlement, priming and foaming.
Softening Methods of hard water -External treatment zeolite softening method of hard water
and Ion exchange or demineralization softening method of hard water.
Desalination of Brackish water- Reverse Osmosis (RO).
UNIT II –POLYMER CHEMISTRY
Introduction, Functionality – Degree of polymerization. Classification of polymers -natural and
synthetic; Plastics- thermoplastic and thermosetting, differences between thermoplastic and
thermosetting. Moulding methods of plastics-Compression, Extrusion, injection, Blown film
moulding. Compounding of plastics. Preparation, properties and applications of poly ethylene,
poly vinyl chloride, Bakelite. Elastomers–Buna-S, Buna-N– Preparation, Properties and
Applications.
UNIT III: ADVANCED MATERIALS IN CHEMISTRY
Liquid crystals: Introduction, types, applications of liquid crystals as LCD and LED.
Conducting polymers – polyacetylene, polyaniline, polypyrroles – Mechanism of conduction
and Applications
Nano materials: Introduction. Preparation and applications of carbon nanotubes, fullerenes.
Carbon fiber: Preparation, properties and applications of Nomex and kevler.
UNIT IV– ELECTRO CHEMISTRY AND CORROSION
Electrochemical cell, Reference electrodes -Hydrogen electrode and Calomel electrode, P H
Electrode-Construction, working principle and applications of Glass electrode. Conductometric
titrations (acid-base titrations).
Chemistry of corrosion: Introduction to corrosion, Chemical and Electrochemical theory of
corrosion, Pilling Bedworth rule, Factors effect on rate of corrosion -Environmental factors (pH,
temperature, Dissolved Oxygen) and Nature of metal.

UNIT V: NON-CONVENTIONAL ENERGY SOURCES


Non-conventional energy resource’s introduction, differences between conventional and non-
conventional energy resources. Design, working, schematic diagram, advantages and
disadvantages of photovoltaic cell, hydropower, geothermal power Design, working, schematic
diagram, advantages and disadvantages of ocean thermal energy conversion, tidal power.

OBJECTIVES:

1.To furnish the students with a solid foundation in Chemistry Laboratory required to solve the
Engineering problems.

2. To expose the students in practical aspects of the theoretical concepts like pH, hardness of water
etc.

3. To guide the students on how to handle the instruments like UV-visible spectrophotometer,
potentiometer and conductometer.

4.To know the student’s preparation of a polymer molecule.

Course Outcomes: At the end of the course, the students will be able

1. Analyze the quality parameters of water.

2. Estimate the amount of metal ions present in different solutions.

3. Determine the strength of different solutions by using different instrumentation techniques.

4. Get basic knowledge on polymers preparation.


Experiments:

Introduction to Chemistry laboratory – Molarity, normality, primary, secondary standard solutions,


volumetric titrations, quantitative analysis.

1. Trial experiment - Determination of HCl using standard Na2CO3 solution.

2. Determination of alkalinity of a sample containing Na2CO3 and NaOH.

3. Determination of temporary and permanent hardness of water using standard EDTA

solution.

4. Determination of Copper using standard EDTA solution.

5. Determination of KMnO4 using standard Oxalic acid solution.

6. Determination of Vitamin – C.

7. Determination of PH of the given sample solution using PH meter.

8. Conductometric titration between strong acid and strong base.

9. Conductometric titration between strong acid and weak base.

10. Potentiometric titration between strong acid and strong base.

11. Estimation of copper by Colorimetry.

12. Preparation of a polymer.

13. Thin layer chromatography. (Demonstration only).

14. Introduction to chemdraw software. (Demonstration only).
