PART 2: READING (20 points)
A. Read the passage and answer the questions by choosing options A, B, C or D:
For long-distance or worldwide communications, computers and LANs are usually connected into a wide
area network (WAN) to form a single, integrated network. Two good examples of wide area networks are
Internet and Arpanet. They transfer data and e-mail for university researchers and academics, commercial
groups, military installations and ordinary people.
Networks can be linked together by either telephone lines or fibre-optic cables. For examples, ISDN
(integrated services digital network) is an international standard for transmitting digital text, sound, voice and
video data over telephone lines. On the other hand, FDDI (fibre distributed data interface) is an optical-fibre
network. This new standard transmits data at great speed – 100 megabits per second.
Modern telecommunications use fibre-optic cables because data can be transmitted at a very high speed
through the extremely wide bandwidths of glass fibres. The fibre system operates by transmitting light pulses
at high frequencies along the glass fibre. This offers considerable advantages: (i) the cables require little
physical space; (ii) they are safe because they don’t carry electricity; (iii) they avoid electromagnetic
interference.

2
Networks on different continents can also be connected via satellite. Computers are connected by a modern
either to ordinary telephone wires or fibre-optic cables, which are linked to a dish aerial. This aerial has a
large concave reflector for the reception and sending of signals.
21. What does WAN stand for?
A. Wild Area Network B. Wave Area Network
C. Wide Area Network D. Window Area Network
22. What is the function of the Internet and Arpanet?
A. They transfer information for people of different working areas.
B. They write emails for university researchers.
C. They send data for groups of commercial workers.
D. They form network which is single.
23. Why do modem telecommunications use fibre-optic cables?
A. Because it is made from glass fibres.
B. Because data has very high speed.
C. Because data has very high speed.
D. For transmitting data at a very high speed through the extremely wide bandwidths of glass fibres.
24. What is NOT an advantage of transmitting light pulses along the glass fibre?
A. The cables are safe because they don’t carry electricity.
B. The cables are not affected by electromagnetic interference.
C. The cables have more longevity because they avoid external interference.
D. The cables don’t need much physical space.
25. What is the concave reflector in the aerial used for?
A. It is used to transmit and receive signals
B. It is used to receive and forward waves
C. It is used for receiving and sending waves
D. It is used for the reception and keeping signals

B. Read the passage and decide whether the statements are T (True) or F (False):
The Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks that use the standard Internet protocol
suite, a set of communications protocols, to serve billions of users worldwide. The internet has reshaped and
redefined most traditional communications media including telephone, music, film, and television. This has
given birth to new services.
The Internet has enabled or accelerated new forms of human interactions through instant messaging, Internet
forums, and social networking. Online shopping has boomed both for major retail outlets and small artisans
3
and traders. Business-to-business and financial services on the Internet affect supply chains across entire
industries.
The origins of the Internet reach back to research of the 1960s, commissioned by the United States
government in collaboration with private commercial interests to build robust, fault-tolerant, and distributed
computer networks. The commercialization of what was by the 1990s an international network resulted in its
popularization and incorporation into virtually every aspect of modern human life. As of 2011, more than
2.1 billion people — nearly a third of Earth's population — use the services of the Internet and the number
has been dramatically through the years.
26. The internet has completely changed traditional media.
27. The internet has had an impact on commerce.
28. The internet was first introduced in the 1990s.
29. There are three forms of human interactions: instant messaging, Internet forums and social networking.
30. More than a quarter of the Earth's population are internet users.

PART 3: WRITING (20 points)

A. Translate the sentences into Vietnamese:

31. Rescue Time is an excellent service that can help keep you focused while on the computer and track how
much time you spend on each task.
32. While the products are getting more and more expensive, it seems that support is starting to be thought of
as an additional business opportunity.
33. The Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks that use the standard Internet
protocol suite (TCP/IP) to serve billions of users worldwide.
34. In graphical interface, the user uses a mouse to click on icon which represents the function to be
performed.
35. One way to get data out of a database is simply to retrieve a record – for example, if we want to check
the data in a single record, such as an employee’s phone number.

B. Write an email to your friend to instruct her/him about how to change the screen brightness into
‘Power saver’ mode. Use these clues to help you. Write about 80-100 words.
- ‘Start’ button→ ’Control Panel’→ ‘Display’ → ’Adjust brightness’ →’Power saver’ check box→
’Close’

Or: Screen → Right click on mouse → ’Personalize’ → ’Display’ → ’Adjust brightness’ → ’Power
saver’ check box → ’Close’

PART 4: LISTENING (20 points)

TASK 1: Listen to three people talking about their companies. Are these sentences true
(T) or false (F)?
Speaker 1:
36. He works for a medium-sized company.
Speaker 2:
37. The other employees don’t enjoy using technology.
38. His company wants a low-cost solution.
Speaker 3:
39. They want to produce designs more quickly.
40. They are new to CAD.

TASK 2: Listen to a technician describing the motherboard to a new trainee. Fill in the blanks
with the missing words.
OK, see the large thing with silver-coloured edges, near the middle – well, just above the middle?
That’s the 41 socket, where the CPU, the central processor unit, goes. Now, can
you see the long orange and white slots to the right of the CPU? There’s a white one, an orange one,
then another white one and another orange one. They’re for the 42 for the DIMM
memory modules.

Now look at the bottom of the board. See the green and orange slots of different lengths? These are
where the 43 card and things like that go. Now, looking at the lelf-hand side: this is
where the connectors are. The lower ones, nearer the bottom, are
the 44 sockets, for the sound. And above them is the Ethernet connector, where you
plug the network cable in. And higher up are some USB ports, for connecting your peripherals – you
know, things like your keyboard and printer. And the hard drives and Blu-ray drive? They plug into
the 45 sockets – they’re the orange things in the bottom right-hand corner. See the
five of them?
