Indirect factors that can adversely impact your grade in

each of the above categories:

Participation
Concepts/objectives met
Following directions
Consistency of daily work habits
Inappropriate behavior
Attendance

Students will automatically be given 50 Studio points per day

:
for coming to class on time, with required materials, and doing
their work as instructed. Points will be deducted for disruptive
or dilatory behavior, not doing work, being unprepared or being
out of uniform.

Class Attendance | Class attendance is critical to student

success. All absences are considered unexcused until a legal
note is presented within an appropriate time period. A grace
period for each legal day of absence will be honored for turning
in assignments. Work missed during absences is the
responsibility of the student. Work is still due on time if a
student is on a field trip or other school event. A student is
considered unexcused tardy if they are not in their seat when
the bell rings.

Classroom Guidelines |

A Always come prepared

Be on time. My motto: If you’re early you are on time. If

you are on time you’re late. And if you’re late you’re lost!

Bring homework and materials to class.

Follow classroom routines.

Be in uniform.

Go to the bathroom before or after class.

Complete your Warm Up in the first five minutes of class.

R Respect

Keep hands, feet and objects to yourself.

Use materials appropriately

Use polite and kind words.

Ask permission.
:
Raise your hand and wait to be called on.

Clean up after yourself.

Use inside voices.

Listen politely when others are speaking.

Follow directions the first time.

T Think and Take responsibility

Stay in your assigned seat until the bell rings.

Accept consequences without arguing or complaining.

Complete your work on time.

Ask for help if you need it.

Rules: Together we will come up with 5 rules to maintain a

Safe-learning Environment. You will own these rules because
you will help create them. If you break these rules there will be
consequences.

Consequences | Consequences will ultimately depend on the

offense. For instance, a fist-fight will necessarily have a more
severe consequence than talking while the teacher is giving
instructions. But in general, consequences will be as follows:

1) If a choice you make breaks a rule one time, you will

be given a verbal or non-verbal warning.

2) If you break a rule second time, I will give you a

direct verbal warning.

3) I will move your seat (until you earn the right to

come back) or ask you to step outside until we can
have a short teacher-student conference.

4) I will have a parent teacher conference (either in

person or phone) and I will document the behavior
:
internally (no administrator, yet)

5) A detention/conference/parent shadowing
accompanied by a phone call or email, and an
administrative documentation will take place (PS-74)
This is a big deal as a PS-74 is part of your permanent
record and can impact you after your time at High Point.
I do not do this often and I avoid it at all costs. In my
safe learning environment I try to work things out with
you directly.

*You get 1 warning regarding the use of smartphones

or other electronic devices for unapproved activities
(THIS IS THE 1 WARNING). If you use an electronic
device for a non-approved activity (and you will know if
it’s approved because you will hear me say: “You can
use your phones to …) it will be confisgated until the
end of the period the first time. I will keep it until the end
of the day the second time. If it happens a third time, a
parent/guardian will have to come in to get it.

Mandatory Materials | Each student must supply their own 8

1/2” x11” or 9” x 12” sketchbook, a ruler, a glue stick, a
pack of graphite pencils, color pencils, scissors and an
eraser by September 1, 2013. Do not bring mechanical
pencils! Please bring a #2 lead pencil and a pink or white
rectangular eraser. All these supplies can easily be found in
the school supply section at WalMart, Target or Staples.
Sketchbooks can be found at Michaels and you can get a 40%
coupon online or your local newspaper. If you forget a pencil or
eraser, you may purchase one from me for 25 cents. Students
will also need a folder with lined paper for writing assignments.

Optional Materials | Each student is more than welcome to

bring their own additional supplies such as markers. These
supplies will be provided in class but selection and quality may
be limited.

Warm-up | Warm ups will be on the board when you arrive. It

is expected that students will be on time, immediately get their
:
warm-up journal from their classes box and begin their warm-
up immediately. The warm up must be attempted and ready to
share within 5 minutes of the start bell. Warm ups will be
graded as often as every day and are worth 1/10 of an
assessment grade.

Sketchbooks | Your sketchbook is a visual journal of

everything you have learned in class. It is your responsibility to
bring it to class each day. If you fail to bring it to class you will
lose 10 points for the day. Sketchbooks will be graded as often
as once a week. Your sketchbooks will have drawings,
sketches, homework, classwork, journal entries, and anything
else you wish to put in it.

Extra Credit | I DO NOT provide “instead of” credit. If a student

has completed all assignments and would like to do extra work
—that is, in addition to all other assignments—I will provide
opportunities for them to “enrich” their grade.

Portfolios | Each student will create a portfolio which will hold

all their art projects. Students are not allowed to bring work
home until the end of the year. Student work will be selected to
be displayed in the school building throughout the year and at
the end of the year’s spring art exhibit. Student work may also
be selected to be entered into various art contests throughout
the county and State of Maryland.

Student Fact Sheet & Photo Release | Please go to the class

website https://sites.google.com/a/pgcps.org/mrsandstrom and
click on the link on the left hand side bar that says
“Photo/Student Work Release”. Please have your
parent/guardian fill this out and return it next class. It is worth a
100 point homework grade. If you do not have internet and/or a
computer at home, there are plenty of computers available
both at school and the public library.

General Classroom Policies

:
Assigned Seats- You will sit in your assigned seats
unless otherwise directed
Class Log- Every time you leave my class you need a
pass and you need to fill out the class log. In the event of
a school- or county-wide emergency, I need to know who
is out of my classroom and who is not. This helps me
maintain your safety
Bathroom- You cannot go to the bathroom during the first
20 minutes or last 20 minutes of the class period (go
between classes or at lunch). If I learn that you are not
using this privilege to actually go to the bathroom you will
lose it.
Pencil Sharpener- If you need to sharpen your pencil,
just quietly get up and do so, but not while I’m giving
instructions or if someone is already at the sharpener.
One person at the sharpener at a time.
Food and Trash- With the exception of bottled water, with
a cap, No food is allowed in the classroom whatsoever.
Rats, cockroaches, odors, and bacteria will result from
disobeying this policy and artworks can and do get
ruined when individuals disobey this policy.
Smart Phones and other Electronic devices must be off
and out of sight, unless I specifically provide
permission to use them for an educational activity.
Cleaning up the room and respecting materials is
absolutely imperative. Students will lose all privileges to
make art if they do not work together to maintain a safe
and clean working environment.

The object of this course is to gain a strong understanding of

the formal elements of drawing as well as basic theory and
vocabulary. Students will be expected to explore a variety of
drawing materials, develop a disciplined approach to studio
assignments and create a strong portfolio through the practice
of observational drawing and group critique.
