A conceptual framework outlines the variables to be studied and their hypothetical relationships, serving as a guide for research. It involves transforming concepts into measurable variables, identifying dependent and independent variables, and hypothesizing their relationships. Additionally, it may include intervening variables and should only include measurable variables to ensure clarity in literature review and analysis.

Conceptual Framework

 Meaning
 Conceptual Model
Meaning
A conceptual framework is a narrative outline
or diagrammatic presentation (or a
combination of the two) of variables to be
studied and hypothetical relationships between
and among the variables
Conceptual framework is compulsory in any
research to streamline it and confine literature
review, analysis and discussion to only the
hypothesized variables
Developing conceptual framework

• Concepts are transformed into variables.

• Dependent and independent variables are
identified.
• Relationships between the two categories of
variables are hypothesized.
• Intervening variables (if any)
• All variable categories are joined with arrows
to show the hypothetical relationships
• Independent V Dependent V
 Income
 Distance to
 Completion of
school
standard seven
 Pregnancy
 Early marriage
 Parents’ biases

Intervening V
 Government
policy
 LGA By-laws
Note:
 Conceptual frameworks may include variables
that are not to be analyzed but help in literature
review.
 Before keeping any variable in the framework,
one must be sure that it is measurable. If it is not,
it should be dropped out.
 Arrows should be used to establish variables’
relationships
