Learning Objectives
- Identify the tools and toolbar in Photoshop.
- Familiarize yourself with the different tools.
- Efficiently use the tools and toolbar to improve photo editing.

Key Concepts: Pixels

- Pixel = short for 'picture element'
- They are the smallest unit of a digital image.
- A digital image is made of a grid of solid-colored squares (pixels).
- At normal zoom (100% or less), images appear continuous.
- Zooming in reveals the individual pixels.

Key Concepts: Image Size

- Refers to the width and height of an image in pixels.
- Pixel dimensions = number of pixels horizontally (width) and vertically (height).
- Access image size via: Image menu → Image Size
- Example: 4509 pixels wide × 3000 pixels tall.

Image Size Dialog Box (Photoshop CC)

- Preview area on the left, details on the right.
- Dimensions: Shows pixel width and height.
- If units aren’t in pixels, change to Pixels using the dropdown.

Key Concepts: Image Resolution

- Refers to how densely pixels are packed when printing.
- Measured in ppi (pixels per inch).
- Affects print size only, not screen display.
- The more pixels per inch, the smaller the printed image.

Width – Height – Resolution

- Found below 'Dimensions' in the Image Size dialog.
- You can adjust them to control print size or image quality.

Resample Option
- On: Changes number of pixels (upsampling/downsampling).
- Off: Changes print size only (units switch to inches/cm).
- Example: 4509px × 3000px → 15.03 in × 10 in (resample off).

Common Misconceptions
- 'Changing resolution reduces file size' – False
- File size depends on:
* Pixel dimensions
* Compression level
* Image format
- Resolution affects print size and quality, not file size.
