Topic: Growth and Development

Aim:

Skills being assessed: M&M, ORR

Materials and apparatus: corn and red pea seeds, water, plastic cups, soil, ruler, graph paper

Procedure:

1. Obtain a plastic cup and place soil in it so that it is just 2-3 cm below the rim.

2. Damp the soil.

3. Strategically place two-three seeds of each type in two separate cups.

4. Measure the heights of your plants from the base to the top of the plants for two weeks.

5. Record your results in a table.

6. Plot a growth curve of your results.

7. Choose two different leaves on each plant and mark with liquid paper.

8. Use a graph paper to measure the leaf area every three days over the two week period.

9. Record and report your findings.

NB. Attach the graph sheets with the traces to your lab report.

Mark scheme

M&M

- Correctly setting up the germinating seeds - 2 marks

- Keeping growing medium moist over the period– 1 mark

- Measurement of height without damaging plant - 2 marks

- – 1 mark

- Measurement of leaf area without damaging plant - 2 marks

- Clean work area - 2 marks

Total: 10 marks
