3.0 Word Problems
𝑥 5
y = 37 - x (substitution) => =3+
37−𝑥 37−𝑥
x = 3(37 – x) + 5 => 𝑥 = 111 − 3𝑥 + 5
4𝑥 = 116 => x = 29
29 + y = 37 => y=8
2. Digit Problems
Example:
The sum of the digits of a two-digit number is 12. If the digit is reversed, the new number is
4/7 times the original number. Determine the original number.
4
y = 12 – x (substitute) => 10 12 − 𝑥 + 𝑥 = 10𝑥 + 12 − 𝑥
7
40 48 4
120 − 10𝑥 + 𝑥 = 𝑥 + − 𝑥 7
7 7 7
840 − 70𝑥 + 7𝑥 = 40𝑥 + 48 − 4𝑥
99𝑥 = 792 => x=8
8 + y = 12 => y=4
3. Mixture Problems
50L 150L
100L + =
80% Alcohol ??? % Alcohol
20% Alcohol
Solution:
0.80(100) + 0.20(50) = x (150)
x = 0.6 or 60%
3. Mixture Problems
Example:
How many quarts of a 60% alcohol solution must be added to 40 quarts of a
20% alcohol solution to obtain a mixture which is 30% alcohol. All
percentages are by volume.
𝑥 𝑥
𝑦 = (substitution) => 𝑥 − 10 = 4( − 10)
2 2
𝑥 − 10 = 2𝑥 − 40 => 𝒙 = 𝟑𝟎
𝑦 = 2(30) => y = 60
4. Age Problems
Example:
Six years ago, Maya was five times as old as Richard. In five years, Maya will be three
times as old as Richard. What is the present age of Richard
Solution:
Let x = present age of Maya, y = present age of Richard
x – 6 = 5(y – 6) (Eq. 1) x+5 = 3(y+5) (Eq. 2)
x + 15 = 25 + x/12
12x + 180 = 300 + x
11x = 120 => x = 10.909 minutes
6. Clock Problems
Example:
How many minutes after 5 o’clock will the hands of the clock be forming
a straight line for the first time?
x - 30 = 25 + x/12
12x - 360 = 300+ x
11x = 660 => x = 60 minutes or 1hr
QUIZ
