Scope and Motivation

In a fully automated and intelligent world, where billions of devices will connect via local and public cloud/edge
networks, telecommunication systems must transfer massive amounts of data at ultra-high speeds with low
latency, all while maintaining reliable connections. Optical networks and systems are pivotal in addressing these
demands, driven by the proliferation of data-intensive and latecny-constrained applications such as 6G wireless
communications, artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and cloud and edge computing.
Today, optical technologies form the backbone of the interconnected world, enabling transformative
applications across diverse industries - from Industry 4.0 and healthcare to smart cities and global connectivity.
Emerging innovations such as photonic integration, machine learning in and for optical networks, and multi-
mode and multi-core fiber technologies are reshaping the landscape, unlocking unprecedented scalability and
efficiency.
Despite the remarkable progress, next-generation applications pose significant challenges, requiring enhanced
end-to-end performance in terms of security, reliability, energy efficiency, and deterministic latency.
Additionally, the emergence of elastic and flex-grid networks, integrated photonic devices, quantum
communications, and software-defined optical networking demands innovative solutions to boost capacity,
resilience, and sustainability. These challenges call for substantial advancements in optical systems across all
segments - from fixed and wireless optical access networks at the edge to data centers and optical backbones.
Meanwhile, as traditional radio frequency (RF) spectra face congestion, optical wireless communication (OWC)
technologies are emerging as a transformative solution, leveraging the vast, unlicensed optical spectrum. OWC
offers unique opportunities for future networks, particularly in hybrid designs combining OWC with RF or fiber-
based technologies for backhaul and access networks. Key challenges remain, including the development of
OWC solutions capable of delivering ultra-high-speed, energy-efficient, and highly secure wireless access for IoT
applications in smart environments, as well as flexible, low-latency backhaul/fronthaul links that can
accommodate rapid traffic growth.
The Optical Networks and Systems Symposium serves as a platform for researchers, practitioners, and
technologists to exchange ideas, showcase their latest findings, and explore critical challenges and
breakthroughs in optical system and network technologies. The symposium aims to inspire innovations that will
shape the future of optical technologies across emerging applications. Papers will be evaluated based on the
novelty of the work, the quality and significance of the results, and the clarity of the presentation.
