6 General notes
6.1 Units
All units are expressed in the international SI system, except for nominal bore sizes of pipes, which are in
inches. Pressures are gauge pressures (in barg), unless otherwise stated. Unless otherwise stated,
Temperatures are in degrees Celsius.
Pressure/Temperature ratings of flanges are based on the latest version of the ASME B16.5 & ASME
B16.47.

6.2 Design limits and pipe wall thickness

6.2.1 Design limits
Pipe wall thickness values that are specified in the Piping Material Specifications are adequate for the full
range of pressure/temperature combinations tabulated.

6.2.2 Pipe wall thickness calculation principle

The calculation of pipe wall thickness values shall be in accordance with the ASME B31.3 design code,
and shall include a corrosion allowance as well as mill tolerances as applicable. The weld efficiency
coefficient of welded pipes shall be equal to 1.0 (i.e. full radiography). Threaded allowance as applicable
by design code to be added as per class specification.

6.2.2.1 Corrosion allowance

All carbon steel and low alloy steel materials shall incorporate a minimum corrosion allowance of 1.27
mm. Stainless steels, copper nickels, glass reinforced materials, and other corrosion resistant
materials shall be used without extra-thickness for corrosion allowance.

6.2.2.2 Mill tolerance

The mill tolerance on wall thickness shall be as follows:
• Minus 8% for diameters 18" and above
• Minus 12 ½% for diameters up to 16".

(These rules take into account the fabrication tolerances applicable to fittings, with a particular
reference to GS EP PVV 144).
Mill tolerance for other material which not specified in document shall be complying with applicable
ASTM standard.

6.2.2.3 Retirement thickness

The minimum wall thickness after reduction by:
• Corrosion Allowance
• Mill Tolerance
• Threading Allowance, where applicable, in accordance with ASME B1.20.1 shall not be less
than the following:

Nominal Pipe Size Minimum corroded thickness

(NPS) (retirement thickness)
½" to ¾" 1.0 mm
1" to 8" 1.5 mm
10" 2.3 mm
12" to 14" 2.8 mm
16" to 24" 3.1 mm
26" to 36" 3.8 mm
38" to 46" 4.6 mm
48" 5.3 mm
Above 48" 6.4 mm

Additionally, schedules "5 S" shall not be used for stainless steels, and schedule 80 shall be selected
as a minimum for pipes 1”½ in diameter and below.
If the wall thickness required to contain the pressure is less than the "Minimum Corroded Thickness",
the "Minimum Corroded Thickness" shall be used for pipe wall thickness selection purpose.

6.3 Pipe diameters

No pipe diameter smaller than ½" shall be used, except for instruments.
Pipe diameters of 1”¼, 2”½, 3”½, 5", 7", 9" and 22" shall not be used. Equipment supplied with
connections of these sizes shall be adjusted to a standard size immediately adjacent to the equipment by
means of a suitable reducing fitting. Bushings shall not be used. For diameters above 24", sizes of 30",
36", 42", 48", 56" and 60" are preferred dimensions.

6.4 Threaded joints

6.4.1 Threads standards

All threaded connections shall have taper threads in accordance with ASME B1.20.1 (NPT) (formerly
ASME B2.1).

6.4.2 Threaded connections limitations

Threaded joints are only authorized on utility lines if and where listed on the relevant piping material
class.
Threaded joints shall not be used on process service, with the exception of instrument connections which
are located downstream a block valve; in such a case, the upstream side of this block valve shall be
flanged or may be socket welded on a nipple with a flanged joint immediately upstream to ensure further
possible maintenance.
Threaded connections are absolutely not authorized in the following cases (related to particular fluids or
services):
• Hazardous service, e.g.:
- Liquids above their Auto-Ignition Temperature (AIT), or at temperatures greater than 210°C, if the
AIT is not known
- Flammable liquids flashing on leakage to form a substantial vapor cloud (this includes LNG
condensate)
- Fluids liable to cause a hazard by blockage due to hydrate formation or solids deposits
- Lethal or toxic substances, including H2S gas
- High pressure air injection (ratings • 900)
• General chemical service
• Highly corrosive fluids (e.g., acids such as hydrochloric or Fluor hydric acids).

6.5 Joining of small bore pipes

With the exception of galvanized systems which shall be joined together only by threaded connections,
small bore piping (1”½ and smaller) shall be joined together by socket welding.
Threaded connections may only be used where permitted under paragraph 6.4.2 of this specification,
and butt welding joints shall not be used.

6.6 Bends and elbows in small bore piping

In small bore welded piping (1”½ and smaller), hot or cold-formed bends with a radius of 5D min. may be
used in lieu of elbows if and where authorized in the relevant piping material class.

6.7 Unions
Unions may only be used where threaded connections are authorized by this specification; in general,
their use shall be avoided wherever possible. They shall not be used in the following circumstances:

• Systems ratings 600 and above

• Where design temperature is above 250°C
• Cryogenic Temperature Service (Design temperatures < minus 46°C).
• Corrosive and Toxic Service (including H2S gas)
• Fuel Gas Service.

6.8 Bolt tensioners

Hydraulic bolt tensioners shall be used on flange stud bolts 50 mm in diameter and larger. Bolting for use
with bolt tensioners shall have the normal length increased by one bolt diameter.

6.9 Valves
All valves shall comply with the requirements of GS EP PVV 142.

6.9.1 Ball Valves

All Ball Valves are meant to be reduced bore, except otherwise indicated on the PID for each individual
Ball Valve. Valves of diameter ” 1”½ shall have a port size at least equal to the internal bore of the
matching pipe.

When Ball Valves are installed in lines that are insulated for any purpose, they shall be provided with
extended spindle assembly suitable for making an insulation seal. Extended spindles shall be:
• For Valves diameter 2 inches and smaller: 100 mm, plus or minus 10 mm
• For Valves diameter 3 inches and larger: 150 mm, plus or minus 10 mm.
For flanged valves, the extended spindle length is measured from the top of an end flange; for screwed
or socket weld valves, it is measured from the top of the valve body.

6.9.2 Gate, globe, butterfly and check valves

Forged materials are acceptable in lieu of cast materials.
Dual plate check valves are acceptable in lieu of swing check valves. Wafer-Lug type check valves are
acceptable in lieu of flanged check valves.

6.9.3 Block and bleed valves

Use of integral block and bleed valves shall be limited to instrument connections.
Instrument connections on either piping or pressure vessels requiring either single or double block or
bleed facilities shall be made of an integrated manifold.
Manifold shall be ball type two or three pieces bolted.
For integral manifold less than 2”, the internal diameter of the main body shall be 10 mm minimum.
The bleed valve shall be needle type with a bolted bonnet.
The side of this integrated manifold, which connects to the piping, or the pressure vessel must be
flanged, whilst the instrument connection side may be flanged or ½” NPT female depending on
instrument connection:
The bleed connection shall be ½” NPTF protected by a metallic plug screwed (as per GS EP PVV 142).
All integrated (or Monoblock) manifolds shall be in line type; the Monoflange type is prohibited.

6.10 Pipes
All metallic pipes shall comply with the requirements of GS EP PVV 143.

6.11 Fittings
All metallic pipe fittings shall comply with the requirements of GS EP PVV 144.

6.12 Flanges, blinds and spacers

All metallic pipe flanges, blinds and spacers shall comply with the requirements of GS EP PVV 145.

6.13 Bolting
All bolting for piping shall comply with the requirements of GS EP PVV 146.

6.14 Gaskets
All gaskets for piping shall comply with the requirements of GS EP PVV 147.

6.15 Slip-on flanges

The use of slip-on flanges is not generally permitted. They may be used, however, where necessary, for
tie-ins, subject to the following restrictions:
• Maximum pressure/temperature rating of class 300
• Maximum design temperature of 260°C
• Carbon steel materials only
• Their use is not permitted in sour, corrosive or severe cyclic services.

6.16 Miter bends

Butt weld elbows shall normally be used. Miter bends shall not be used except where specifically agreed
by the Company. In case such an agreement is given, a re-run of the flexibility analysis of the
corresponding line is necessary. No agreement may be granted on lines requiring more than 5%
radiographic examination, or being stress relieved, or being subject to sour, corrosive or severe cyclic
services.

6.17 Glass Reinforced Plastic materials (GRP)

GRP materials shall comply with GS EP PVV 148.

6.18 Branch Connection

The principle is as follows:
• Connections of equal sizes always require an equal Tee.
• Connections where both header and branch are of a diameter less than 2 inches are made using
Tees (equal or reduced).
• Reducing or equal Tees to be used if the branch diameter is equal to half the header diameter or
larger.
• All other connections shall be made using branch outlet fittings such as weldolets, sockolets,
sweepolets etc., for branch diameters less than half the header diameter only. The use of weldolets
shall be limited to 8” branch diameter maximum to avoid the risk of welding thermal distortion.
Sweepolet or reducing tee plus reducer are to be used instead.
• Special cases may require different rules or means for reinforcing branch connections (including the
use of extruded headers, etc.). These must be submitted to the Company for decision.
• Except for branch connections made of equal or reduced tees, the use of integral reinforced
connections in one single piece (comprising the required reinforcement, a nipple -“nippolet”-, and
eventually an end-flange - “weldoflange”) is permitted.

6.19 Spectacle blinds

Spectacle blinds dimensions (thickness) and materials shall be fully justified by the Engineering
Company by appropriate calculations in accordance with the applicable ASME code (i.e., ASME B31.3).
Detailed calculations shall be submitted to the COMPANY for approval.
