GENERAL

Description ENGINE Control Panel

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) controls and monitors the start sequence 1. It is installed on the Center Pedestal and comprises:
either in automatic or manual mode.
The ECU is able to abort the automatic start sequence in case of an incident:  ENG MODE Selector Switch
 ENG Master Switch (2)
 start valve failure  Annunciator FAULT Light (2)
 ignition failure  Annunciator FIRE Warning Light (2)
 HP fuel shut off valve failure
 high EGT
 engine stall

The system consists :

 of a start valve
 an air starter
 two ignition boxes and
 igniters (A&B).

The start valve is fitted with a manual override handle for mechanic
intervention on the ground.

Control Description

DISTRIBUTION

Ignition boxes Precautions

Ignition box design. Caution: Make sure that the ignition boxes are de-energized before working
on the ignition system. The voltage output can be dangerous. Do not touch
The ignition exciter electrical circuit consists of : the electrical contacts, the ignition boxes can continue to contain an electrical
charge when they are not energized.
 An input circuit.
 A rectifier and storage capacitor circuit. Caution: During start valve manual override operation, obey all safety zones
 A discharge circuit. while the engine is operating. There is sufficient suction to kill or cause
serious injury to persons by pulling them suddenly into or against the air
The AirCraft (A/C) alternating input voltage is rectified and stored in intake. The high temperature, velocity and overpressure in the exhaust gas
capacitors. wake is also very dangerous.
In the discharge circuit, a spark gap is set to breakdown when the capacitors
are charged, delivering a high voltage pulse at a regular rate.
A stainless steel housing encloses the exciter components.
The components are secured, mechanically, or with silicon cement for
protection against engine vibration.
The housing is hermetically sealed, ensuring proper operation whatever the
environmental conditions.

Input voltage: 105-122 VAC (115V nominal)

380-420Hz (400 Hz nominal)

Output voltage: 15-20KV at the end of the ignition lead

1. NORM Position

 Normal Position after ENG start:

1. in this Position the FADEC can select ignition automatically

under the following conditions:
 Engine Anti Ice ON
 EIU Failure
 Engine Flame Out Detected

2. IGN/START Position

has to be selected for:

 Normal Starting Procedure (Automatic)

 Alternate Starting Procedure (Manual)
 Continuous Ignition, when the engine is running.

when selected to IGN/Start :

 Both pack valves are closed.

1. If the engine start is not carried out within 30 sec the pack
valves open again.

 FADEC is power supplied.

3. CRANK Position

 FADEC is PWR supplied

 Ignition is inhibided, engine motoring is possible, when the

CONTINUOUS RELIGHT AUTO IGNITION

Aircraft configuration: Automatic Ignition is provided by the FADEC when:

 APU AVAILABLE and APU BLEED on.  Engine anti-icing is switched ON,
 One or two engines are running.  EIU failed,
 Engine flame out is detected,
Manual Selection  In flight restart is initiated.
If "IGN/START" is reselected with one or two engines running, the
corresponding ECU supplies the two igniters together, to provide a
permanent ignition.

When "NORM" is restored, the continuous relight is cut off.
