M1103 Eng

The document is a partial exam for MATH 1103 at Lebanese University, consisting of three exercises. Exercise 1 involves calculating determinants and expressing them in terms of previous values, Exercise 2 requires solving a system of equations using row echelon form, and Exercise 3 examines subsets in R4, determining their properties as subspaces. The exam tests mathematical concepts related to linear algebra and determinants.

Lebanese University MIS-April 2017

Faculty of Sciences (V) Duration: 1 H.

Partial Exam
MATH 1103

Exercise 1 (15 points)

∀n ∈ N∗ , we define:  
21 0 ··· 0
. . . . . . . . . ..
 1 .
 

 . . . 
 0 .. .. .. 0
Dn = det  

 . .
 .. . . . . . . . . 1

0 ··· 0 1 2

a. Calculate D2 , D3 .

b. Express Dn in termes of Dn−1 and Dn−2 , ∀n > 3

c. Calculate, by induction on n, the value of Dn .

Exercise 2 (20 points)

Let m ∈ R, we consider the system (S) defined by:

 x + 3z = 3
(S) : x − my + z = m
−x + 2my − mz = 3 − 2m

Solve explicitly and discuss the system (S). (Hint: Use the method of row echelon form.)

Exercise 3 (15 points)

In R4 , we consider the subsets:

U = {(x, y, z, t) ∈ R4 , x 6 y 6 z 6 t}

V = {(x, y, z, t) ∈ R4 , x − 2y + z = 0}
W = {(x, y, z, t) ∈ R4 , x − y = z − t}

a. Show that U is not a subspace of R4 over R.

b. Show that V is a subspace of R4 over R.

c. Find a particular solution of the system:

x − 2y + z = 0
(S) :
x−y−z+t=0

Deduce that V ∩ W 6= {0}.

Good Work.
