PHYSICS ACTIVITY
CHAPTER-MOTION
MAKE MARBLE ROLLER COASTER –
A marble roller coaster is a small-scale track designed to allow a marble
to roll along a guided path, simulating the motion of a real roller coaster.
It typically consists of ramps, loops, curves and drops built using
materials like cardboard, foam tubing, plastic tracks.
Learners will measure the following for the motion of marble on roller coaster-
(i) Distance (ii) Displacement (iii) Speed (iv) Velocity
GUIDELINES
• Design and build a marble roller coaster using material of your choice.
• Analyze and explain the motion of the marble, focusing on acceleration, velocity, distance and
displacement
• Present your observations for this activity in a neatly drawn observation table on A4-sized sheet.
The Observation table(s) should include appropriate headings such:
❖ OBSERVATION TABLE-1
Serial Number, total distance travelled, total time taken, speed etc.
❖ OBSERVATION TABLE-2
Serial Number, Net displacement, total time taken, velocity etc.
EXTENDED WORKSHEET
Q1. Based on your observation table calculate the average speed and average velocity of the marble
how are they different in your experiment?
Q2. Suppose a marble of mass 50 gram moves down the roller coaster and colloids with stationery
marble of 50 gram at the end. After collision, both marbles move together. Use the law of
conservation of momentum to calculate the final velocity if the first marble was moving at 60 cm per
second before the collision.
Q3. What role does gravity play in the motion of the marble on the roller coaster? How does it affect
the Kinetic and potential energy and various points? Draw a labelled diagram showing high and low
energy position.
Q4. Imagine if the second marble (in Q3) was lighter say 30g, will the final velocity be higher or
lower? Justify your answer with calculation and reasoning?

beaker, String or wooden skewer, Pencil or chopstick (to suspend
string/skewer), Food color (optional), Clip or weight (to keep string hanging
straight), wax paper.
Guidelines:
1. Prepare the wooden Stick
Dip a wooden stick in water, roll it in sugar, and let it dry completely on a
wax paper for an hour (This forms a base for crystal growth.)
2. Make super-saturated Sugar Solution
Heat 1 cup of water and gradually stir in 2–3 cups of sugar on medium
heat until no more sugar dissolves.
3
The solution should look thick but clear. This is super saturated solution. (Optional: Add food
coloring or flavoring.)
3. Cool the Solution
Let the solution cool for 5–10 minutes to avoid melting the sugar on the stick.
4. Set Up the Jar
Pour the sugar solution into a clean jar. Suspend the sugar-coated stick in the centre using a clip and
chopstick.
5. Grow Crystals
Cover loosely and leave the jar undisturbed in a cool place for 5–7 days. Crystals will start forming in
1–2 days.
6. Remove the stick once crystals are big enough. Let it dry and enjoy your homemade rock candy!
EXTENDED WORKSHEET:
Q1. Why do you need heat the water before adding sugar?
Q2. What challenges or problems did you face during the activity? How did you solve them?
Q3. (a) What do you observe immediately after placing the stick or string into the sugar solution?
