5. You are the manager of a Gap jeans store. Mary, your best salesperson, has been coming
to work late recently and is not performing very well during working hours. You hear
rumors from other employees that she is having problems with her landlord who will not
fix her air conditioner. She may have to move to another apartment. You hear another
rumor that the real reason Mary is coming late is because she is upset with your new
employee. Mary thinks for some reasons that the new employee you recently hired is
making more money a month without having to meet the same sales quota. You also hear
Mary may quit.

(a) Identify the two motivational theories from the text that may best explain why Mary is
not engaged at work. Name the theory for each rumor and explain how it may explain
Mary’s behavior. (10 marks)

(b) Briefly discuss what steps you could take to keep Mary and to improve her job
satisfaction. Use THREE additional motivation theories than those used in Part 1 to
justify your approach. Theory explanation and specific examples will strengthen your
answer. (15 marks)

6. (a) Describe mechanistic and organic organizational structures. (7 marks)

(b) Contrast the two using organization design criteria. (8 marks)

(c) You are an entrepreneur based in Hong Kong who wants to launch a chain of Chinese
Noodle Shops in Melbourne, Australia. Considering the mechanistic and organic
forms of organization, how would you organize these stores if you want to keep your
head office in Hong Kong. Why? You can support your answer using examples of
existing organizations in addition to associated design considerations. (10 marks)
