Overview:
Influence of Feedback from Others: According to DeLamater and Myers (2012), feedback from
others profoundly impacts self-perception. In the online environment, interactions with
significant others shape how individuals present themselves in virtual spaces. Positive
reinforcement, such as “likes” and supportive comments, can influence the way people craft
their digital identity. This feedback often becomes an integral part of their self-concept,
reinforcing desired behaviors and image online.
Risks of Personal Information Disclosure: In online spaces, sharing personal information can
raise ethical and privacy concerns. The desire for social approval sometimes leads individuals to
disclose sensitive details, but this sharing can expose users to potential privacy risks. Balancing
openness with privacy is crucial in digital interactions to safeguard personal well-being.
Digital Technology’s Role in Advocacy: Social media has become a powerful tool in raising
awareness about social justice issues, especially for vulnerable groups. For instance, digital
platforms support legislative efforts to protect against discrimination based on sexual orientation
and gender identity. By advocating for equal rights and using online media responsibly, digital
spaces can positively shape social norms and protect individual dignity.
The digital self represents how individuals present and shape their identities online.
Influenced by social interactions and feedback, people manage their online image to fit desired
impressions, often sharing personal and gender-related information. With increasing online
engagement, digital technology has become instrumental in promoting awareness and
combating discrimination, particularly for the LGBTQ+ community. However, ethical
considerations around privacy remain critical, highlighting the importance of mindful digital
interactions and self-presentation.
The Data Privacy Act of 2012: To safeguard citizens from the risks of personal information
theft, the Philippines enacted Republic Act 10173, known as the Data Privacy Act of 2012.
This law ensures the protection of an individual's fundamental right to privacy while also
facilitating the free flow of information that fosters innovation and growth.
The act recognizes the critical role of information and communication technology (ICT) in nation-
building and mandates that both government and private sectors secure personal data. Personal
information, as defined by the law, includes any data that can directly identify an individual or
that, when combined with other information, could reasonably identify someone.
Lesson Ender:
We’ve learned how the internet, social media, and mobile phones shape who we are
online, and how Filipino values play a key role in how we connect with others digitally. We also
discussed the importance of protecting our digital identity through laws like the Data Privacy Act
and the responsibility of institutions to prevent things like identity theft, misinformation, and fake
news.
Now, think about how you can protect and manage your own digital self. What steps can you
take to ensure your online presence is safe and true to who you really are? Take a moment to jot
down your thoughts on how you can practice responsible digital behavior in your daily life.
