INTRODUCTION
Being 17, a polyglot and an art student, makes art a way to express myself in the form of
drawing. Inspired by the cultures of the languages that I indulge myself with (self taught), whilst
also expressing the culture of Trinidad and Tobago as it is. The cultures of many different
ethnicities are appealing to the eye and are interlinked with art in many different ways.
Hieroglyphics and sculptures are all part of Caribbean history. I indulge myself in the cultures to
know more about myself and others around me. Art is also therapeutic and aids with the
compression and control of my anger issues, anxiety and ongoing depression/stress in the
ongoing years. When I draw/design something it distracts me from childhood trauma or any
current issues that may hinder my spirit. Doing art allows me to express my feelings with just a
paper and pencil or a computer screen.

REASON FOR CHOOSING EXPRESSIVE FORM:GRAPHIC DESIGN
I picked graphic design because as a little boy I always wanted to become an entrepreneur dn
open my own business, graphic design plays a big part in that. Images and creations,
illustrations, advertisements and many more aspects are necessary in opening a business. This
summer I plan to run a temporary business to accumulate the funds for a proper future. Only
issue was, growing up as a child I was more into drawing and paper and pencils, never got the
hold of technology at an early age. So it is a bit more difficult to develop and create these
amazing astounding and astonishing illustrations graphic designers do. I do hope to reach that
level some day.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR GRAPHIC DESIGN:
Graphic design, a blend of art and technology, utilizes visual communication to convey
messages through a vast plethora of genres like images, videos, websites and many
more.Graphic design is rooted from ancient times through communication methods like
Hieroglyphics, paintings and drawings in caves progressing through the development of printing
and print media from all the way to the early 1900s.
Graphics design can be created with tools relating to all different forms of art such as, ink,
painting, colouring, drawing with pencils etc.
In the 21st century, graphic design has become a crucial placeholder for businesses to
advertise, market, package and create websites for products and services. Graphic design has
reached far especially in the world of technology where people now use computers to develop
images.

EXAMINATION ON SELECTED ARTIST:
JEROME HARRYLAL
Jerome Harrylal is a Trinidadian graphic designer that owns a business named “Guess Who
Concepts” creating posters, flyers and book covers etc, for other businesses. He didn’t have a
set goal on what he was passionate about and dabbled in many things. He even has a business
at the side selling bonsai trees. His first job was Media Sales Limited. Now he produces images
in a large company for many other businesses in Trinidad and Tobago.
Figure 1: Logo for B’s IceCream. Figure 2: Novel/Book Cover for (unknown)

Figure 3: Design For Holiday’s Snack.
EVALUATION:
His work is amazing, graphic design is straightforward and also a difficult task. He manages to
get what the company wants from an image into a sketch and I aspire for something similar.

PRESENTED PIECES AND PROCESS:
BOOK COVER: “THE CURRENTS”

CATERING SERVICE FLYER:”EASTER SALE”
I USED A SIMILAR STYLE TO JEROME HARRYLAL WITH THE WAY HE FORMATS HIS
DESIGNS, STARTING WITH A BACKGROUND, ADDING IMAGES AND INSERTING TEXT
TO CREATE MY FINISHED PIECES.

REFLECTION AND ARTIST STATEMENT.
I have learnt from this journal to be more timely, and to have a more organised schedule and to
stop procrastinating. This artist didn’t procrastinate and constantly worked to get where he is
now. I want success like he has.
