Unit 1 : Communication Skills

1. What is communication?
Ans:- The act of giving, receiving and sharing information is known as communication. Signs
and signals provide information. Communication can take the form of speaking, writing or any
other medium. The word ‘Communication’ comes from the Latin word communicare, which
means ‘to share’.
2. How many types of communication methods are there?
Ans:- There are main three types of communication methods –
1. Verbal communication 2. Non-Verbal communication 3. Visual communication
3. What are the various elements of a communication cycle?
Ans:- The various elements of a communication cycle are –
Sender – The person beginning the communication.
Message – The information that the sender wants to convey.
Channel – The means by which the information is sent.
Receiver – The person to whom the message is sent.
Feedback – The receiver’s acknowledgment and response to the message.
4. What are the seven elements that influence the communication skills?
Ans:- There are 7 different factors which affecting perspectives in communication –
i. Language ii. Environment iii. Visual perception iv. Culture
v. Feelings vi. Prejudice vii. Past experience
5. What is effective communication?
Ans:- There are 7C’s effective communication which are applicable for both written as well as
oral communication. These are as follows:-
i. Clear – Always say clearly, what you want to say.
ii. Concise – Always use simple language and say only what is required.
iii. Concrete – Always use proper words and phrases in the sentences.
iv. Correct – Always use correct spelling and grammar in the sentences.
v. Coherent – Your word should be related to the main topic and your word should make
sense.
vi. Complete – Your message should be complete and have all the needed information.
vii. Courteous – Be honest, respectful and friendly with others.
6. What is verbal communication? Also write down its type.
Ans:- Sounds, words, languages and speech are all examples of verbal communication.
Speaking is one of the most effective and often used in verbal communication methods.
i. Interpersonal communication ii. Written communication
iii. Small group communication iv. Public communication
7. What are the advantages and disadvantages of verbal communication?

Ans:- Advantages of verbal communication –
i. Time Saving – We can express our thoughts easily and quickly and it is an easier form of
communication.
ii. Quick Feedback – We can get a quick response from the listener.
Disadvantages of verbal communication -
i. Cultural Difference – The cultural difference is the main disadvantage of verbal
communication.
ii. Language Barriers – Difficult to share thoughts or ideas in different languages.
8. What is non-verbal communication?
Ans:- Without using word if you are sending some information to others is known as non-verbal
communication. Some of the non-verbal communication’s are –
i. Eye Contact ii. Gestures iii. Expressions iv. Posture
9. What is verbal communication and its type?
Ans:- Sounds, words, language and speech are all examples of verbal communication.
Speaking is one of the most effective and often used in verbal communication methods.

10. What are Written Skills? How to improve writing skills?
Ans:- If you are sending any message or instruction through writing is known as written
communication. Written communication is important because it communicates the message
with clarity.

i. Improve your vocabulary ii. Capitalization rules iii. Punctuation iv. Basic parts of speech
11. What is the difference between verbal and non-verbal communication? Explain with
examples.

Ans:- Gestures – Gestures make the major art of our body language. Gestures that occur in the
control of our subconscious mind convey our state of mind like movement of hands, fingers,
legs.
Eye contact – The way we make eye contact tells a lot about us. Right kind of eye contact
reflects confidence and sincerity.
13. How does our attitude determine the effectiveness of our communication?
Ans:- Our attitude builds our behavior and response to a message. Our positive attitude helps
us in relating others easily and on good terms. This makes the base of effective and positive
communication while negative attitude builds unfriendly environment. We cannot relate with
others positively which leads to ineffective communication. A positive attitude means the person
is cheerful, open and confident while negative attitude means stubborn, hopeless and lack of
enthusiasm.
14. What care should we take while we meet and talk to a person for the first time?
Ans:- First we should ensure that the environment and surroundings are suitable to
communicate. Our perspective helps us understand people and situations. Our perspective
determines how we encode a message as a sender and how we decode it as a receiver. While
communicating with others we should use the simple and suitable language. We should not
judge the person through some preconceived notions. Our attitude should be positive and we
should not carry any perception based on our past experiences.
15. How is a phrase different from a sentence? Give 2 examples.
Ans:- A set of words that indicates some object or action but does not makes complete sense is
called a phrase while a group of words that makes complete sense is called a sentence. For eg.
Phrase – a beautiful frock Sentence – She is wearing a beautiful frock.
Phrase – is eating Sentence – Raj is eating a mango.
16. Giving 2 examples each, explain Noun, Adjective, Verb and Adverb.
Ans:- Noun is name of a person, place, thing, event, animal or idea. For eg. Suman goes to
school. I am reading a book.
Verb is any action or state of being. Like, Suman goes to school. I am reading a book.
Adjective describes a noun or pronoun. Eg. I am reading an old book. He is wearing a red cap.
Adverb describes a verb, another adverb or adjective. Eg. He walked down the hill quickly. He
looked at her angrily.
17. What is preposition? Give 4 examples of preposition.
Ans:- Preposition shows the relationship of one noun, pronoun or noun phrase with others. For
eg. The dog is sitting under the table. There are two birds in the bush. I kept the pen on the
table. There is a mango among the apples.
18. How does articles differ in usage for constants and vowels?
Ans:- Article ‘an’ is used before vowel sounds and ‘a’ is used before a constant sound.

For eg. He eats an apple daily. Butterfly is an insect.
They bought a book. I saw an aeroplane.
19. What are the basic rules of good paragraph writing?
Ans:- 1. The topic on which the paragraph needs to be written should be clear.
2. A paragraph should begin with the topic sentence.
3. Major part of paragraph should include the sentences which elaborate on the topic more.
4. Paragraph should end properly with a closing sentence or conclusion.
20. What do you mean by interjection and conjunction? Explain with 2 examples each.
Ans:- Interjection reflects strong emotions followed by exclamation sign (!). For eg. Oh!, Hey!
Eg. Hey! Where have you been so long? Wow! This idea of picnic sounds great.
Conjunction connects two word, phrases or sentences. For eg. So, but, and , or , therefore
Eg. I would have loved to come for the party but I have my exams tomorrow.
21. You need to write an essay about your favourite leader. Which basic writing skills
would you apply in doing so?
Ans:- An essay includes more than one paragraph. We need to apply following basic writing
skills : i. Correct usage of grammar
ii. Give brief introduction about the leader, describe his qualities as a great leader, his
achievements and failures too. How he learnt from his failures. How he influenced people
positively and other important incidents of his life.
Iii. Keeping the sentences simple and short. iv. End the essay with a brief conclusion.
22. Identify parts of speech in the following paragraph.
Deforestation is when humans remove or clear large areas of forest and related
ecosystems for non-forest use. These include clearing for farming purposes, rural
and urban use. In these cases, trees are never re-planted. Since the industrial age,
about half of world’s original forests have been destroyed and millions of animals and
living things have been endangered.
