Mr. Bakitabwire grows beans as his source of income to pay fees and
cater for the family needs. His land has been exhausted therefore the
yields lowered. He decided to hire a new piece of land in a nearby
village. When he started ploughing the land, it was hard and sticky. He
employed a tractor but when he planted, the beans still gave a very
poor yield due to too much rain.

There is an outbreak of a rare disease in Kimanto village in Luuka
District with the following signs and symptoms; abdominal pain, passing
of dark urine, fever, joint pain, Nausea and vomiting, yellowing of skin
and eyes (jaundice) and loss of appetite.

Item 4
Kafeero, a senior four student whose family lives in Namanve industrial
area, has been smoking since he joined peer groups. Recently, he was
having difficulty in breathing and sometimes he produces wheezing sound
when breathing out. His mother and young brother do not smoke but they
have the same complications like Kafeero. These suspect their clan
members in the village to be sending “witchcraft” to kill them.
Task
As an educated biology student, give a detailed piece of advice to the
family of Kafeero that will convince them to stop suspecting witchcraft
from relatives. (20 scores)
Item 5
Mr. Ssebuliba, a 59 year old, has been the secretary of Nakwaya SS for
the last 35 years. These days he reads a book, when he has placed it at a
distance from his eyes. One day, his 50,000 note of money fell when he
was walking towards his office; a student saw the money and informed
him. Mr. Ssebuliba turned and saw the money but as he drew closer to
the money to pick it, he could not see it though the student was still
seeing the money on the ground. Both were surprised about the incidence.

Write a detailed scientific explanation to this incidence and hence give
Mr. Ssebuliba an appropriate advice to solve this problem.
Part II

Item 6
A village family lacked a dustbin for the previous years and dumped
wastes in the garden. After some years their land became less
productive and the family had severe poor yields. This year, one of
the family children reached secondary school and learnt that
plastics and metals in rubbish are not decomposed by organisms and
tend to reduce soil aeration causing death of soil organisms
resulting in to soil infertility. On returning home, he decided to dig
a rubbish pit and later their harvests increased. The child was
appreciated and was asked other things they study. She only said
“Thanks to biology”.
Task: Explain what the child meant? (20 marks)
Items 7
A 48 year old patient presents the following symptoms- swollen feet
and general body weakness (tiredness/fatigue). Doctors
recommended the patient to have a simple meal which included
bread, piece of egg and water. After three hours resting, blood and
urine samples were obtained and test on his urine sample made. The

test results on concentration of different substances in blood, and
urine are presented in table below.
Task.
Explain why resting was necessary and analyze the patient’s results to
provide possible solutions on how the condition can be managed
