ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE(AI): OPPORTUNITIES OR THREATS?

AI provides numerous benefits such as reducing human errors and increasing accuracy and precision,
time saving capabilities, digital assistance, unbiased decisions and decision-making by leveraging vast
data to identify patterns and trends often invisible to humans. It can analyze historical data and predict
future outcomes, allowing businesses and individuals to make informed decisions quickly and
5 accurately. Humans can overcome many risks by letting AI robots do them for us. So, many studies
show humans are productive for only about 3 to 4 hours daily. They also need breaks and time off to
balance their work and personal lives. But AI can work endlessly without breaks. It thinks much faster
than humans and performs multiple tasks simultaneously with accurate results. Digital assistants
represented by AI are employed by some of the most advanced companies to interact with users,
10 reducing the need for human personnel. Many websites use digital assistants to deliver content based
on user requests, enabling us to have conversational searches. Another known benefit of AI is the
automation it brings along! In our daily work, we perform many repetitive tasks, such as checking
documents for flaws and mailing thank-you notes. Artificial intelligence may efficiently automate these
menial chores and even eliminate "boring" tasks for people, allowing them to focus on being more
15 creative. Today, our everyday lives depend entirely on mobile devices and the internet. We utilize a
variety of apps, including Google Maps, Alexa, Siri, Cortana on Windows, Google, taking selfies,
making calls, responding to emails, etc. AI can help us using these applications rapidly and effectively.

While artificial intelligence offers numerous benefits, it also presents some disadvantages. It often lacks
the intrinsic creativity of humans, which stems from emotional depth, abstract thinking, and imaginative
20 processes. The increasing reliance on AI for tasks ranging from routine to complex decision-making
can lead to human laziness. As AI systems take over more responsibilities, individuals might become
less inclined to develop their skills and knowledge, relying excessively on technology. AI-driven
surveillance systems can erode personal privacy, leading to potential misuse of data by corporations,
governments, or cybercriminals. Additionally, there is a risk of data breaches which can compromise
25 personal and financial information, leading to identity theft and other forms of exploitation. The rise of
AI and automation technologies poses a substantial risk to employment, particularly in industries reliant
on routine and repetitive tasks. Jobs in manufacturing, retail, customer service, and even specific
professional sectors like legal research or medical diagnostics are increasingly being automated, leading
to significant job displacement. The development and deployment of AI technologies can have
30 significant environmental impacts. Training large AI models often requires substantial computational

power, which demands considerable energy consumption. This can contribute to increased carbon
emissions and exacerbate climate change.

COMPREHENSION CHECK
A/ Find in the text words or expressions corresponding to the following meanings or definitions. The
indicated lines may help you. Write your answers like in the example.
Example : 1- outcomes
1. results (line 4)
2. exactly, without error (line 5)
3. triumph over (line 5)
4. solicitations (line 11)
5. irregularities (line 13)
6. not considered important (line 14)
7. belonging to the essential nature of (line 19)
8. dependence (line 20)
9. get control of (line 21)
10. gradually destroy (line 23)
11. unauthorized exposures (line 24)

B/ Read the text again and then say whether these statements are true(T) or false (F). Quote the
line(s)of the text to justify your answers like in the example. Example : 1-T (line 1)
1. AI helps in reducing human errors and increasing accuracy.
2. AI can analyze past data to predict future outcomes.
3. Humans are more productive than AI in terms of time and efficiency.
4. AI can work without taking breaks
5. Digital assistants help companies interact with users and reduce the need for human employees.
6. AI can automate repetitive tasks, allowing humans to focus on creativity.
7. AI is superior to humans in creativity and abstract thinking..
8. AI can make people lazy by taking over responsibilities.
9. AI-driven surveillance can compromise personal privacy.
10. AI automation threatens employment in industries that rely on repetitive tasks.
11. AI development has environmental consequences due to high energy consumption.

PART TWO : LANGUAGE IN USE (30%)

A/This is the conclusion of the text above about artificial intelligence. To make it meaningful, fill in the
gaps with the missing words from the box below. One word in the box is not concerned. Write your
answers like in the example.
Example: 1-disadvantages

2/4
However - ensure - disadvantages - highlighting - creating - roles -
undeniable - ongoing - cons - fair - implementation - control

Now that you understand the advantages and (1)...........of AI, one thing is certain: AI holds massive
potential for (2)...........a better world. (3)........., humans must (4)...........that the development and
(5)..........of AI remain under (6)........... Despite the (7)...............debates about its pros and (8)........, AI's
impact on global industries is (9.)........ It continuously drives sustainability for businesses,
(10).............the importance of AI literacy and upskilling to thrive in numerous emerging job (11)............

B/ The passage below is about what the artificial intelligence is. Choose the appropriate form of the
verbs between brackets to make it meaningful. Write your answers like in the example

. Example: 1 – associated

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the ability of a digital computer or computer-controlled robot to perform
tasks commonly 1(associate, associated, associating) with intelligent beings. The term is frequently
2(applied, applies, applying) to the project of 3(develop, developing, developed) systems endowed
with the intellectual processes characteristic of humans, such as the ability to reason, discover meaning,
generalize, or learn from past experience. Since their development in the 1940s, digital computers have
been 4(programmed, program, programming) to carry out very complex tasks—such as
5(discovering, discover, discovered) proofs for mathematical theorems or playing chess—with great
proficiency. Despite 6(continuing, continue, continued) advances in computer processing speed and
memory capacity, there are as yet no programs that can 7(matching, match, matched) full human
flexibility over wider domains or in tasks requiring much everyday knowledge. On the other hand, some
programs have 8( attained, attain, attaining) the performance levels of human experts and
professionals in 9( executing, execute, executed) certain specific tasks, so that artificial intelligence in
this 10(limit, limited, limiting) sense is 11( found, find, finding) in applications as diverse as medical
diagnosis, computer search engines, voice or handwriting recognition, and chatbots.

Task A:
At a meeting of your school English Club, the chairman said: “It’s awful that with the advent of AI
applications such as Google Maps, Alexa, Siri, Cortana on Windows, Google assistant, the new
generation no longer goes to libraries for researches. Worse, AI is reducing our personal effort
and get us lazy”

In not more than 25 lines, write an article that will be published in your club’s magazine in which you:
