1. Introduction

Semiconductor diode is the fundamental component in a semiconductor

electronic device. The most common function of a diode is to allow an
electric current to pass in one direction (called the diode's forward direction),
while blocking current in the opposite direction (the reverse direction). Due
to this function, diode can be used for many electronics applications
especially as a switch or an amplifier. In this assessment, the task will be
divided into two parts:

Task 1: Carry out simulation investigation to verify the operation of diode in

DC and AC circuits using appropriate engineering tools and equipment.

Task 2: Do the analysis, discussion and conclusion to the practical

investigation carried out.

2. Objectives

• To understand the characteristics of diode.

• To determine the biasing of the diode.
• To measured and verify the operation of diode in DC and AC circuits.
• To simulation the operation of diode in DC and AC circuits by using
engineering software tool.

3. Method/Software

• Multisim / Proteus Software

TASK 1: DIODE APPLICATION [80 marks]

1. (a) Simulate and construct circuit in Figure 1 by using a simulation software

and measured the voltage across for all resistors and diodes in the circuit
by using the multi-meter.

2. (a) Construct and simulate the circuit in Figure 2. By using virtual
oscilloscope, measured peak-to-peak input voltage, (Vip-p) and R4 output
load voltage,(Vop-p). Screenshot and attach the oscilloscope readings that
show input signal and output signal. Clearly mark the peak-to-peak values
of input and output signals (Vi(p-p) and Vo(p-p) ) on the oscilloscope.

4. (a) Simulate the circuit in Figure 4. Note that T1 is a 5:1 step-down
transformer with primary coil of 50 turns and secondary coil of 10 turns. By
using oscilloscope, generate the secondary coil peak-to-peak input voltage
(Vin p-p) and output voltage (Vout p-p). Print the oscilloscope readings that
show input signal and amplified output signal.
