Vocabulary:
“Do you know why we hang out a lot? Because I learn so much from your
sarcasm!” Jason said chuckling, then he continued, “but seriously, I am excited
about the party after that, Laura invited me to their house!” Jason tried to
continue, but Sam did not listen to him anymore. Sam started feeling dejected
and fearful that that could be the day she would lose her best friend.
Samantha knew that day would come eventually; the day when Jason
would find someone he could be himself with, as well. Samantha just kept silent
while they continued to walk. When they got to school, Laura was already waiting
for Jason at the entrance.

Questions:
After that day, Jason kept on hanging out with Laura and
all her friends. It turned out that Sam was right, Jason had finally
found a group of friends and that meant he might not need her
anymore. It’s like everything changed in a snap of fingers.
Sam felt sad about it, but she preoccupied herself with
ballet dancing so that she wouldn’t think much about it. One
day her dance teacher told her that she had been offered a
scholarship for a college in Chicago. That was big news for her.
Jason knew about Sam’s big dream, and had always
supported her. He heard about her scholarship when Sam’s
mom and his were talking. So he rushed to Sam’s house to
congratulate her.

Questions:
Sam finally decided that she would not take the scholarship.
She had received a letter from the University of California. Her
mother called her on her way to school saying Jason had injured
himself in a basketball game and had broken his arm. She was so
worried that she ran to the hospital.
Sam broke in tears when she saw her best friend lying on the
hospital bed. Jason’s mom entered the room and said: ’’You are
the only one here, I wonder where the rest of Jason’s friends are?’’
They didn’t even know how this catastrophe would change his life.
The doctor said that Jason has to undergo an operation, but both
of them knew that they cannot afford that. Sam and Jason’s mom
hugged and solaced each other.

Months have passed and Jason finally went to college. He never saw
Sam again after his operation. Her mother told him that she took the
scholarship in Chicago and will not be back for two years. He regretted that
he had wasted time not hanging out with her more.
One day, Jason’s mom came and gave him a letter. ‘Sam wants you
to have this’. Jason took the letter and started reading it.
‘Dearest Jason,
I’m sorry I have to go without saying goodbye. I took the scholarship in
Chicago. When I saw you on that hospital bed, with a broken arm, I chose to
use the money I had saved for your operation. I told your mom not to give
this letter to you if you are not fully recovered yet. I believe you already are!
Congratulations!
P.S. I told you, I am not closer to my dreams than you are! We are equally
close to them, even if it means I have to drag you with me! Have a nice life
and see you soon!’
