Assignment

This assignment for the CEB 702 Geotechnical Engineering course includes seven mandatory questions related to soil mechanics and foundation engineering. Students are required to assume suitable soil parameters and provide detailed calculations for scenarios involving footings, pile capacities, SPT tests, retaining walls, struts, sheet pile walls, and under-reamed piles. The assignment emphasizes the application of theoretical concepts to practical geotechnical problems.

ASSIGNMENT

Course Code- CEB 702 - Branch & School BE-Civil (Hons)

Name Geotechnical & SBCE
Engineering
Year Year - 3 Semester Semester – 1

INSTRUCTIONS
1. Assume suitable soil parameters or any other data and mention it explicitly in
the solution
2. All questions are mandatory to write

Q. No. Questions
1 A square footing 2 m wide carries a load intensity of 400 kPa at a depth of
1.5 m in sand. The saturated unit weight of sand is 20 kN/m³ and unit
weight above water table is 16 kN/m³. If c = 0 and ϕ = 26°, determine the
factor of safety with respect to shear failure for the following locations of
water table:
a. Water Table (WT) equivalent to the Ground Level (GL)
b. WT is 1.5 m below GL
c. WT is 3.0 m below GL
d. WT is 6.0 m below GL

2 As shown in figure, a 0.8 m diameter round pile driven into a sandy soil
stratum. Compute the allowable pile capacity with FOS 3.0. Assume any
other data as needed.

3 A SPT test was conducted for newly proposed construction of multi-

million business hub and the following data was obtained. Determine the
corrected SPT values.

4 A retaining wall has a vertical back and is 10 m high. The back face of the
wall is smooth, and the upper surface of the fill is horizontal. Determine
the active thrust and its line of action on the wall per unit length. Take C=
18 kN/m2, = 21 kN/m3, ϕ= 18° neglect tension.

5 Determine the forces on the struts for the bracing shown below. Assume
hinges at levels B, C and D. Take density and cohesion as 18 kN/m3 and
30 kN/m3 respectively. Assuming the horizontal spacing between the
struts is 2.0 m.

6 A cantilever sheet pile wall penetrating a granular soil. Take L1 = 2.5 m,

L2 = 3.5 m, bulk density = 16 kN/m3, saturated density = 19.33 kN/m3, and
ϕ = 32°.
a) What is the theoretical depth of embedment, D?
b) For a 30% increase in D, what should be the total length of the
sheet piles?

7 A cast in-situ two bulb under reamed pile having a diameter of 500 mm
and 10 m length was placed in a soil stratum. The top 3.5 m is expansive
soil had a Cu = 25 kPa. The below soil layer had a Cu = 40 kPa. Determine
the pile load capacity (both compression and tension). Take  = 0.5
