THE HISTORY AND IMPORTANCE OF HADITH

CLASSIFICATION/METHODS OF HADITH COLLECTIONS

Different methods were adopted by the compilers of hadith books to compile

their books.

Two well known methods are:

(1) Masnad & (2) Musannaf

(1) Masnad (first transmitter)

• Means ‘supported’
• Ahadith are collected and arranged according to the names of their original
narrator irrespective of their subject or theme
• Ahadith in Masnad collections are gathered according to the name of first
transmitter which is companion
• Collector of musnad is known as ‘musnid’
• Musnad differs in their arrangement of authorities who related them. In some they
are arranged
o In alphabetical order
o According to their merit in acceptance of Islam or in taking part in the
early important events of Prophet (SAW)’s mission
o According to the affinity of their tribe to the Holy Prophet (SAW)

Benefit:

• Complete sanad is mentioned which allows the hadith to be traced back to

Prophet (SAW) – guarantees authenticity
• This collection of ahadaith is helpful in studying the life and work of particular
narrator
• Useful for detecting Hadiths attributed to a particular Companion

Example:
• Masnad Ahmad bin Hambal – Books begins with companions closest to Prophet
(SAW) ; his wives, four rightly guided caliphs and 10 blessed companions etc.
There are chapters by name of Masnad Abu Bakr, Masnad Umer etc
• Abu Dawud

(1) Musannaf (main teaching)

• Means ‘divided up’ (as it divides the Hadith according to subject matter e.g.
Zakah, inheritance etc)

COMPILED BY: AYESHA SAULAT (2017) 1

• Ahadith narrated by different narrators on particular theme is collected in one
chapter
• Compilers examined the Matn rather than isnad
• Chapters on inheritance, purification, sale, marriage and divorce etc are part of
Musannaf
• Comprehensive collection of Hadith

Benefit:
• This collection of ahadaith is useful in understanding the Hadith related to
particular topic or subject
• Useful for understanding the Prophet’s teachings on a particular point of
Belief or practice.
• They are particularly useful in establishing matters of law.

Example:
• Al-Mawatta of Imam Malik – earliest collection
• 6 authentic books were compiled using this principle

OTHER TYPES OF HADITH COLLECTIONS

3) MU’JAM

• Differ from one author to another and are arranged in alphabetical order
sometimes as per:
o Names of comapnions
o According to region
o According to alphabetical listing of the names of the teachers of the
compilers
• Example: al-Mu’jam As-Sahf (collection of al-Tabarani)

4) JAMI

• Books that covers all aspect of Sunnah

• It has 8 topics:
I. Aqeedah (belief)
II. Siyar (plural of seerah, biography of Prophet (SAW))
III. Adab (Social behavior)
IV. Tafsir (commentary of the Quran)
V. Fitnah (civil war, crisis, temptation)
VI. Ahkam (laws of all kinds)
VII. Al-Isharat (signs of the last Day)
VIII. Manaqib (fine qualities of Prophet (SAW))

• Exapmle: Sahih Bukhari – it has ahadith in all these chapters

• Jami Tirmidhi

5) SUNAN

• These are collections that contains Ahadith al-Ihkam (legal traditions)

• They omit material relating to historical, spiritual and other matters
• Example: Abu Dawud , an-Nisai, Ibn Majah

6) MUSTADRAK

• Contains continuations of previous work

• Original collectors did not include this in their work due to some reason even
though the transmitters fulfills the condition laid down by the scholars for
acceptance of Hadith
• This collection of hadith fulfills the criteria

• Example: Mustadrak of al-Hakim al-Nisaburi - he assembled a large number of

Ahadith which fulfilled the stringent conditions laid down by Bukhari & Muslim,
but were not included by them in their sahihs

7) ARBA’INIYYAT

• There are collections containing 40 Ahadtih related to one or more subjects which
may have appeared to be of special interest to the compiler
• Example: Arbaeen Nabwi of Imam Nawawi
