Recommended (and not required) Textbook:
• Introduction to Mathematical Statistics. 8th edition. By Robert Hogg, Joseph McKean, and Allen Craig
(Previous versions are fine.)
Head Teaching Assistant (TA):
• Hajin Lee (이하진):
[email protected]Course Description (Topic, Notes, and Readings): Students will learn mathematical approach to statistical
concepts and basic methods. This is a first course on the mathematical theory of statistical inference for students
with a good grasp of calculus-based probability. Topics covered include conditional probability, random variable,
discrete and continuous distributions, elementary statistical inferences, consistency and limiting distributions,
maximum likelihood methods, sufficiency and completeness, and optimal tests of hypotheses.
Prerequisites: This is an introductory course in mathematical statistics. No prerequisite in probability and statistics
is required, but studying those materials from STAT201 (Calculus for Statistics) or STAT221 (Introduction to
Probability Theory) will be very helpful unless the students have sold mathematical background.
Course Materials: Handouts for each chapter, course materials and grades are available at KU Blackboard
(kulms.korea.ac.kr). There, course notification will also be posted, so check our course site on a regular basis.
Homework: Homework sets from the main textbook are handed out on a bi-weekly basis. There are approximately
6 assignments over the semester. Each homework may contain around 10 questions, at least 3 of which will be
randomly selected and graded for score (The remaining questions may not be graded). Late homework without
legitimate reasons (such as sickness with medical certificate) will get 50% penalty. You are encouraged to work with
others on the homework, but you should always write up your final solutions by yourself.
Participation & Quiz: Approximately 4 quizzes will be given throughout the semester, each at the start of class
without prior notice. Students will have 20 minutes to solve about 2 questions about topics recently covered in class.
Exam: Midterm (30%) and Final (40%).
• Midterm: 16:30 - 17:45, Monday, October 23, Location: TBA
• Final: 16:30 - 18:30, Monday, December 18, Location: TBA

Academic Integrity: Cheating is an extremely serious offense. In any case, a student caught copying someone
else’s work and claiming it as his/her own will get loss of academic benefits. I am obliged to report such incidents
to appropriate University authorities.
