2. Ball A and B of masses 3 kg and 5 kg respectively are put on a smooth track which is flat at the middle and
bends upwards at both ends. Ball B is resting at the flat part while ball A is released from rest from a height of
80 cm above B. Ball A moves in opposite direction with a speed of 1.5 ms-1 after collision with ball B. It is
given that the impact time is 0.2 s.
(a) Find the speed of ball A just before collision with ball B.

3. The photo shows a turntable commonly used in restaurants. A teapot of mass 2 kg is put 30 cm from the centre
of a horizontal turntable. Figure 3 shows the side view. When the turntable is rotating, the teapot remains at the
same position on the turntable.

4. The Hubble Space Telescope has a mass of 11 000 kg. It orbits around the Earth at an altitude of 560 km. Given
that the radius of the Earth is 6400 km.

5. An average current of 8.9 10−7 A is drawn within 2 ms when two parallel metal plates are connected to a
500 V power supply. A beam of electrons with horizontal velocity 4 107 ms−1 enters midway into the region
between two horizontal metal plates as shown in Figure 5. The length of the side of the plates is 10 cm and the
separation between them is 2.5 cm.

6. Figure 6 shows a circuit for measuring the resistance of resistor X connected across P and Q. The resistance of
resistor S is 10 k . The internal resistance of the 9 V cell and that of the ammeter are negligible. When the
switch is closed, the ammeter reads 8.5 mA.

8. Figure 8 shows two identical small metal spheres X and Y suspended by insulating threads of the same length.
Each sphere has a mass of 1.0 × 10−5 kg and each carries a positive charge of 3.1 nC (l nC = 10-9 C). The
separation d of the spheres is 10 cm. The size of the spheres is negligible compared with their separation,
therefore they can be treated as point charges.

9. The following set-up is used to study the resistivity of aluminium at room temperature. Given that diameter of
the aluminium wire is 1.0 mm. The length of the wire L is varied and the voltage across XY is recorded by a
voltmeter and shown in figure 9. During the experiment, the current of the circuit is maintained at 4.5 A.
