Sumometrics Industries Inc. was established in 2011 by its founding Chairman and President,
Mr. Richard Yap Lim. The company is regarded as one of the pioneer-providers of earthquake
recording instruments in the industry. In its first two years of operations, the company resorted
to educating the industry on the usefulness of its seismic monitoring system through business
presentations and product demonstrations to building owners, major property developers,
building management associations, and building managers, and participation in trade shows.

Since most of the buildings in the country are compliant with the National Structural Code of the
Philippines (NSCP) in accordance with the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM)
standards, Mr. Lim decided to partner with American company Refraction Technology, also
known as “Reftek”.

Reftek System Inc, now a subsidiary of Xeos Technology of Canada , has been in the seismic
and structural monitoring business for the past 40 years. Reftek is one of the suppliers of the
.
United States Advanced National Seismic Systems (ANSS), which is under the United States
Geological Survey.

The Canadian American company’s extensive knowledge and experience in monitoring

structures like building, dams, bridges, ground motion, volcanoes, and other structures were the
factors considered by Mr. Lim to introduce Reftek’s products in the Philippine market.
Sumometrics aims to provide useful data recorded by its equipment installed on the top, in the
middle, and in the basement floors of a building during an earthquake.

The RTP alert software after an earthquake can produce critical information, such as Phivolcs
Earthquake Intensity Scale (PEIS), Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) Scale, Japan
Meteorological Agency ( JMA ), Peak Ground Acceleration, Peak Ground Velocity, and Peak
ground Displacement, and etc., to help building management to implement their own
earthquake protocol whether to evacuate or not.

The system is comparative to installing a ‘black box’ inside the building to record all movements
and behaviors of the structure during an earthquake. A separate software named the Compass
Software which is sold separately can provide In-depth analyses of the data recorded, such as
the Maximum Acceleration, Spectral Intensity, Predominant Period, Mean Period, 2PI*Vmax/
Amax, Maximum Velocity, Maximum Displacement, Cum Abs Velocity, Arias Intensity, Arias
Duration (5-75), Arias Duration (5-95), JMA intensity, MMI scale, and PEIS are broken down to
three axis movement: vertical, longitudinal, and traverse.
All these information can be seen as raw files waveform or numerical files. These are the
important critical results that can be utilized by structural engineers using structural engineering
software.

To date, Sumometrics has already installed seismic accelerograph system in almost all types of
building structures, from single to multiple buildings sharing a common podium or basement,
casinos, banks, residential buildings, and mixed use towers all over the Philippines.

Clients can attest to Sumometrics’ superior standards of installation and superb after sales
maintenance service to its equipment installed.

The company was even the first to introduce a monitoring station in administration office, or the
CCTV room, wherein the client can view the performance of the three accelerographs located at
different levels of the building. From this central monitoring station, one can extract and print
data from the three accelerographs. .

Sumometrics is, likewise, the first company to introduce device tagging. It tags its conduit pipes,
NEMA enclosures, pull boxes, and accelerograph boxes as its standards of superior installation,
and so their seismic lines and equipment cannot be mistaken by other maintenance crew from
other utility providers. The company strictly implements “no exposed wires” regulations to avoid
cutting or tampering of the system.

All installations come with an as-built plan duly certified and signed by a Professional
Electronics Communication Engineer (PECE). The plan contains the location and orientation of
the accelerograph with column reference of which was duly certified by either the client’s
structural engineer on record or the Company’s structural engineer consultant.

As per the 2015 Guidelines on Earthquake Recording Equipment or better known as

accelerograph recorder, An accelerograph recorder device should have its own recorder both
for ambient and triggered seismic recorder, accelerometer sensor, internal battery, LCD panel to
see state of health.
