Report 1

Understanding the device

OBJECTIVE: Students should foreseen the schedule of the job to be done and they should understand the working inputs and outputs of the
machine.
1 Consider what it is seen during class to foreseen the steps to follow
2 Predict the Project Work Breakdown Structure
3 Represent it on a Gantt schedule. Consider potential milestones, conflicts and issues.
4 Black Box
5 Technical Spec. Of your device
6 Test Bench design proposal
7 Competition Research. Search for other Tech Spec so you can compare
8 Using the intuitive understanding of the DEVICE create a systems diagram to describe the operation and control of the device.

Report 2

Disassemble the appliance

OBJECTIVE: Students should document each step of the disassembly process using notes, drawings and/or digital photography, to prepare
step-by-step directions that accurately describe how to disassemble, and, subsequently to reassemble the "DEVICE". They should also
1 Dimensional Analysis
Sketch and Identify the individual parts. BOM.
Checklist and discuss materials
Prepare disassembly and reassembly directions with measurements
Drawings with dimensions
2 Glass Box
How they are combined to create systems and subsystems
Brainstorm several ideas
Discuss design choises and tradeoffs
Describe the Device by means of Black Box Model and afferwards by Glass Box Model
3 Functional Analysis / Transforming to Eng. Spec
Foreseen some performance characteristics that you think are expected by the user.
Checklist of Mechanisms or Scientific Processes
Identify the purpose of subsystems as input, process, output, or feedback.
Checklist of Nature and Process of Technology
Physics knowledge
Environmental Impact
Technological nomenclature
State of the art of major items (patents search)
4 Review: critical analysis of the documentation
Think about the engineering of this product. Identify some of the requirements, specifications and constraints that influenced the
design, material selection and manufacturing of the product. Idem, mathematical models

Report 3

Understanding the Market

OBJECTIVE: By means of different techniques students should be able to think about the engineering of this product. Identify some of the
requirements, specifications and constraints that influenced the design, material selection and manufacturing of the product.
1 House of Quality (HoQ)
2 Failure Mode Analysis
3 Triz Analysis
4 Further steps prior to Market introducion

Final Report

OBJECTIVE: The working teams are asked to summarize the whole work and consider all the feedback done by the Professor.
1 Define the index of the report. Organizing by Otto and Wood’s “Reverse Engineering and Redesign Methodology”
2 Elaborate the body of the report:
Present the information from your research, both real world and theoretical, or your design
Organize information logically under appropriate headings
Convey information in the most effective way for communication:
use figures and tables
use bulleted or numbered lists
use formatting to break up large slabs of text
3 Draw the final conclusions
Discuss with your colleagues, and consider the following items
Finally, consider the following items:
What kinds of specialists do you think will be involved in the design of definitive solution?
Identify at least two lifecycle issues for the product. What parts do you think will be the most difficult to dispose?
Discuss the ethical concerns about reverse engineering of definitive solution
4 Prepare the oral presentation of the report
