Lesson 12
Pakistan Towards Press Freedom
Learning Objectives:
Background:
Freedom of expression and a free press are fundamental pillars of a democratic state. Article
19 of Pakistan's 1973 Constitution guarantees freedom of expression as a basic right of
citizens. The popularity of digital media has facilitated press freedom; however, it also poses
challenges like the rapid spread of fake information, defamation, and hate speech. The
government makes certain legislations to deal with such issues from time to time, that may
impact the free speech and press freedom. To address these issues, mass media scholars, the
journalist fraternity, and policymakers must work together to ensure a more responsible and
constructive use of mass media, ultimately serving national interests and free public discourse.
