Timeline: viral phenomenon

Check out this timeline of four memorable viral sensations. Have you seen them?
Gangnam Style, 2012
‘Gangnam Style’ is a pop song by the South Korean musician Psy. It was released on 15th July and by 21st
December it had become the first YouTube video to reach one billion views. It spread virally thanks to positive
comments by bloggers and famous musicians, including Katy Perry, who shared it on Twitter. The catchy song
also features some amusing dance moves, including one that imitates riding a horse. The dance has been
recreated by many people including the US President Barack Obama.
Ice Bucket Challenge, 2014
This craze consisted of challenging three people to donate $100 to charity or be videoed pouring a bucket of
ice-cold water over themselves and making a smaller donation. Many people chose the water option, which
was great entertainment. The challenge went viral when over a few days in July various US golfers performed
the challenge. It raised over $220 million for charity.
The Mannequin Challenge, 2016
In this viral internet trend, participants stayed completely still while one person with a camera moved around
them filming them. It is thought students at a high school in Florida, USA started it in late October and by early
November it was viral. Many US sports teams took up the challenge with athletic-looking positions.
The challenge wasn’t for charity but was simple fun with no complicated dance moves to learn!
Baby Shark, 2018
This old children’s song was turned into a video by Pinkfong, a South Korean education company, which
released it in 2016. It is thought that Korean pop bands helped its success by performing it at concerts.
However, it didn’t go viral until 2018 when #BabySharkChallenge was started and people filmed themselves
recreating the song and its simple dance. It is the most-watched educational video in history, with over five
billion views.
