INTRODUCTION
This report includes design calculations for the Reinforced Earth retaining walls for the
above project. The design has been based on the following information provided by the
contractor.
(a) (b)
Figure 1: External Failure Modes a) Overturning, b) Forward Sliding
c) Bearing failure of foundation soil
d) Slip failure of retained and foundation soil
(c) (d)
Figure 2: External Failure Modes c) Bearing Failure, d) Slip Failure
The design of Reinforced Earth® wall is based on the assumption that the foundation below
RE walls is competent to withstand the service and ultimate state loads.
2.1.2 INTERNAL STABILITY
In internal stability, the design is used to determine the amount of soil reinforcement required
to maintain the structural integrity of the reinforced soil mass. Sufficient reinforcement is
provided to ensure the following internal failure modes do not occur:
a) Tensile rupture at any point along the length of the reinforcement
b) Loss of frictional bond (adherence) between the reinforcement and the soil fill.
(a) (b)
Figure 3: Internal Failure Modes a)Tensile Rupture, b) Loss of Friction Bond (adherence)
First, the tensile forces to be resisted at each layer of reinforcement in the structure are
calculated. In the tie back wedge method, these tensile forces are derived from a lateral
earth pressure coefficient, ka. This value of ka is constant throughout the depth of wall (
Figure 4.a) and it is derived from Rankine’s active earth pressure theory. Having determined
the tensile forces at each layer of reinforcement, the number of polymeric strip required to
resist these forces is calculated. This is based on the long term design strength of the
polymeric strip and the frictional force (adherence) that can be generated between the
polymeric strip and the fill.

6.0 m

The apparent coefficient of friction μ*, between the fill and the polymeric strip can be
conservatively considered as 1.1 at top and linearly varying to 0.8 tanΦ at a depth of 6m
from top and down as per NF P94-270. For the Reinforced Earth fill specification used on
this project (φ’ = 32° Coefficient of Uniformity CU≥ 2), μ* varies from a value of 1.100 at a
depth of 0.0m to 0.5 at depth of 6m or greater.
GEOCORE® CONNECTION SYSTEM
The patented mechanical connection between the facing panels and the soil reinforcement
is partially cast into the precast concrete facing panel. These connectors contains a recess
through which polymeric strap is threaded into and thus, fitted to the facing panel on the
jobsite.
The strips are shipped to the job site in rolls of a maximum length of 100m. The strips are
laid twice the design length plus 0.5m, then punched with a hole on one end to connect
threading device to guide through recess. The 0.5m accounts for the amount of strips lost
in connection, not included in design. Once placed in recess, the strips are laid on select
granular fill with equal (design length, typically 0.7 x H) on each side of connection.
DURABILITY PERFORMANCE
An important aspect of the structural durability is the specification of the Reinforced Earth®
backfill material. The electro-chemical property of the backfill is to be checked to meet the
requirements specified in Table 4 of BS8006: 2010.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION OF POLYMERIC STRIP

ASTM
Ultimate Tensile Strength kN 25 30 40 50 60

Based on the above factors, the LTDS has been calculated. For design additional
ramification factor of 1.1 has been considered as per table no.9 of BS8006:2010
requirement.
SEISMIC EFFECTS
The seismic aspect of the design is not described in BS8006. Thus, the seismic design is
based upon the principles in the equivalent French standard NF-P 94-270 ‘Soil
Reinforcement – Backfilled structures with inextensible and flexible reinforcing strips or
sheets’. The value of maximum ground acceleration (αo) largely depends on which of the
four classified zones of the country the structure is located within.
The design seismic acceleration considered is 0.16g for Zone –III as per IS 1893 : 2016,
Part-1. This has been interpreted as a horizontal bedrock acceleration of 0.10g.
It has been assumed that the seismic design case is to be considered as an accidental load
case and that the effect of traffic surcharge is ignored during the seismic event. All
assumptions used in the calculations for the seismic design case are conservative and
represent the most onerous load case scenarios. For low seismic accelerations such as
these, the difference between the static and seismic design cases will be negligible.
Many Reinforced Earth® structures have been designed to this standard and subjected to
significant seismic events such as the devastating earthquake, which struck Turkey in
August 1999. This 45-second earthquake, measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale, caused
widespread damage to buildings and significant loss of life. Whilst several highway
structures suffered irreparable damage, the Reinforced Earth® structures remained largely
serviceable.
SETTLEMENT EFFECTS
Reinforced Earth® structures are designed to be flexible and are therefore more tolerant to
the effects of settlement than conventional reinforced concrete structures. Flexibility of the
facing is achieved by the use of discrete precast concrete facing elements comprising
nominal 2.0m wide by 1.6m high panels. The 15mm gap between the panels allows
movement between adjacent panels to occur without causing structural damage to the
facing. Based on this facing panel arrangement, longitudinal differential settlements of the
order of 1%, or 100mm every 10m, can be accommodated
FACING PANELS
The facing to the structures is formed from reinforced concrete precast panels. As specified
in Table 9 of BS8006, the facing panels are designed to comply with BS5400: Part 4: 1990:
‘Code of practice for design of concrete bridges’. The panels are modelled as slabs and are
designed to resist the imposed soil pressures acting on the rear face of the panel.
Reinforcing steel to the panel is detailed to withstand the resultant load effects under
ultimate limit state (ULS) and serviceability limit state (SLS) conditions.
A series of ‘Standardization Files’ have been prepared to enable the program to be used in
accordance with many different codes of practice (e.g. BS8006, AFNOR NF P 94-270). For
this particular project, a standardization file written around the load factors and safety factors
in BS 8006:2010.
VEHICLE PARAPET AND SUPPORT STRUCTURES
Vehicle containment on highway structures is usually provided by impact barriers or
parapets located at the edges of the structure. For Reinforced Earth® structures, the
parapets are mounted on a cast-in-situ reinforced concrete anchor slab. This anchor slab
must be designed to resist the impact loads arising from a vehicle collision with the parapet.
DRAINAGE CONSIDERATION
The reinforced earth backfill is considered a self-draining media, having sufficient
permeability to eliminate any destabilizing lateral forces due to hydrostatic pressure and
ground water seepage. This is in line with figure 49, Section 6.10.5.2. of BS 8006: 2010,
requirements of drainage for RE walls. However, a 600-mm wide drainage bay as shown in
construction drawing shall be provided behind the precast panel as specified in clause 3.3,
IRC:SP:102-2014.
