Project Lightning –1-pager-overview

• Abu Dhabi use artificial production islands near oil wells (“clusters”).
• Oil production currently powered by sour-gas gas turbines
• Sour gas turbines aggressive to environment and equipment, high
maintenance and high cost
• Currently naturally flowing wells, but pressure is decreasing and ADNOC are
planning to implement compression units which adds significant load.
• Power from Shore by HVDC selected
• using primarily nuclear power from the nearby newly commissioned
Barakah nuclear plant delivered largely by KEPCO.
• More sustainable and much lower cost than to continue use island based
gas turbines and add/replace turbines.
• Required for ADNOC to reach their targets on emissions (e.g. reduction
of emissions by 25% by 2030).
• More links are required in the future to meet ADNOCs targets.
• First HVDC project in the region, and for both ADNOC and Samsung

• Contract signed December 22:nd 2021.

Reactor used in several positions in the

converter.
Current Limiting Reactor (029)

Converter reactor (003) essential for the

control of active and reactive power.

High frequency reactors (damping

circuit 098) lowers radio interference
distortion from converter.
0.1-2 MHz

Smoothing reactor (005) damps
