[TOTAL MARKS FOR SECTION B: 15]

Answer the questions of this section on the question paper, in the spaces provided.

Read the extract given below and answer the questions that follow:

Comprehension Passage:
Marie Curie was a pioneering scientist best known for her research on radioactivity. Born in
Poland in 1867, she moved to France to continue her studies, as women at the time had
limited access to higher education in her home country. Curie became the first woman to win
a Nobel Prize and the only person to win Nobel Prizes in two different scientific fields—
Physics and Chemistry.
Curie and her husband, Pierre, worked together to discover two new radioactive elements:
polonium and radium. They carried out their research in very difficult conditions, often using
basic equipment and working long hours. Their discoveries changed the way scientists
understood atoms and led to important developments in medicine and energy.
Marie Curie believed that science should be used to benefit humanity. During World War I,
she helped develop mobile X-ray units that were used to treat wounded soldiers on the
battlefield. She also trained other women to operate these machines, making a significant
contribution to medical care during the war.
Despite her achievements, Curie faced many challenges because she was a woman in a male-
dominated field. She often had to work harder than her male peers to gain recognition and
support. However, she remained dedicated to her work and inspired many other women to
pursue careers in science.
Today, Marie Curie is remembered as one of the greatest scientists in history. Her discoveries
not only advanced scientific knowledge but also saved lives. Museums, schools, and research
centers around the world have been named in her honor, and her legacy continues to inspire
future generations.
