Focused and Diffuse Learning Modes
Focused and Diffuse Learning Modes
Focused - prefrontal cortex, things your familiar with eg. Multiplication, rhyming words
Diffuse - solve or figure something new. Broad ranging perspectives. Neural resting state.
Tackle procrastination with Pomodoro timer - set timer to 25 mins for focused learning, then mental
relaxation for diffuse reward. Just get past initial discomfort as that will pass.
Practice and repetition important for abstract thinking eg. Math. Time and practice moves new
information from working memory to long term memory
Working memory like a fading blackboard and long term memory like a vast warehouse. Don't cram.
No time for solid structures to grow. Practice and repetition makes permanent memories.
Sleep washes away toxins. Exercise improves memory and ability to learn.
Success in life is passion and persistence. Not smart. Not giving up.
Chunks - Focus, practice and repetition create strong memory traces and chunks. Expertise is when
small chunks build to big chunks. Pieces of info bound together by use and meaning. Network of
neurons that compactly synthesizes key ideas or actions. Single easy to access item in working memory.
Chunks are best built with:
1. Focused undivided attention
2. Understanding basic idea
3. Context - where top down big picture and bottom up learning meet. When to use that technique.
4. Practice - to gain big picture context
