In-class Assignment 01

Refer to Figures 1 given for use in this question.

A group of workers are involved in a building project. The table shows the activities involved.
Each worker can perform any of the given activities.

Activity Immediate Predecessors Duration (days) Number of Workers Required

A – 3 5

B A 8 2

C A 7 3

D B, C 8 4

E C 10 2

F C 3 3

G D, E 3 4

H F 6 1

I G, H 2 3

Figure 01
(a) Complete the activity network for the project on Figure 1. (10 marks)
(b) Find the earliest start time and the latest finish time for each activity, inserting their values
on Figure 1. (20 marks)
(c) Find the critical path and state the minimum time for completion. (10 marks)
(d) The number of workers required for each activity is given on the table above. Given that
each activity starts as early as possible and assuming there is no limit to the number of
workers available, draw a Gantt chart for given that the project starts on a Monday, work is
carried out Monday to Friday (excluding weekends), and public holidays are observed, draw
a Gantt chart for the project schedule starting from today 10th March 2025, referring to
calendar months. Clearly indicate:
a. The start and end dates of each activity are based on the earliest start times. State
this in a separate table after deriving dates from the Gantt chart.
b. Non-working days (weekends and public holidays) where work cannot take place.
c. Any overlapping activities, if any.
d. The total project duration considers these constraints. Did it make any changes to
identified critical path earlier, state justifications.
(30 marks)
(e) Identify the number of workers required for complete each activity. Workers are supposed
to work only 08 hours per day. (20 Marks)

(f) It is later discovered that there are only 7 workers available at any time. According to your
understanding then state whether the originally planned resource allocation must be
adjusted or not? Will the project be overrun on the stated dates earlier?

Hint: check your Gantt chart to see how this is going to apply for your project. (10 Marks)
